The trend of Hollywood films beating the business of the Hindi film industry continued with this week’s releases.
The Hindi releases were Ram Gopal Verma’s Veerappan, Radhika Apte’s Phobia and Naseeruddin Shah’s Waiting. The Hollywood film ‘Angry Birds’ had a very limited release and the occupancy wasn’t too high either, yet the business was almost as much as all the three Bollywood films combined.
Waiting and Phobia are disasters, with both the films collecting around 0.5 crore combined. Veerappan has a chance with the film collecting around 1.5 crore on Friday, but even that film needs big growth of 50-60% on Saturday to have any chance of doing well in the long run. Angry Birds has collected around 2 crore net.
With a limited release Hollywood films are now beating the combined business of small Bollywood releases and the big budget international films are now matching or surpassing the collections of films not starring the Top 5 stars in the country. It’s time for our industry to analyse why the audience isn’t giving smaller films a chance. Even films like Azhat and Sarbjit have struggled to not just recover costs but even to get a decent initial, even though the lead actors travel across the country to promote their films. On the other hand, Angry Birds and X-Men have had little or no promotion – yet have managed a decent initial on Friday morning.
It won’t be long before the threat from Hollywood becomes more serious. 2015 was a turning point with films like Fast and Furious 7, Avengers and Jurassic World. 2016 has been bigger and The Jungle Book remains the top grosser and the film to beat this year.

india is the only county where regional films perform better than Hollywood but if we don’t change our taste or raise our standard in technical department, soon bollywood will be overshadowed too by Hollywood films- SRK
one of the main reason for hollywood films working well in India is the content of their movies the different genres and the excitement around the movie which lacks in most of Ballywood movies nowadays be it top actors or the lower budget movies.
Just compare the movies with good content and creativity of this last five years with old Bollywood movies, nowadays the repeat in movies are so much high and recreating a movie is very common in Bollywood while in Hollywood its different or if they are sequel they are good ones.
I loved the old Bollywood movies very much and still watching some of them.

big problem with small scale mass oriented movies is decreasing in single screens. we had 23 single screens before multiplex era but now we have only 4-5 in indore.

and another reason is that superstars like srk ,hritik , amir and sometimes salman has one release per year even for movies like chennai express , hny dilwale srk take 1 year they should do 2 movies per year unless there is a ambitious project
Waiting and Phobia had limited appeal while Angry Birds game is popular in India is an entertaining family movie . Its only the case of Indian audience choosing entertainment over content as they always do . No need to make a fuss of it .
when someone spends money he needs to get value for his money, Bollywood films doesnot give the value for money of the viewer. Whether you watch a movie in theatre or on TV it doesnot make any difference on the other hand Hollywood movies provide great visual spectacles which are meant to be seen on the big screen. Also the prices of ticket are same for every movie so if I have to spend the same amount of money I will go for the movie which gives me great theatre experience not for movies like phobia or waiting.
Because ticket prices are way too costly..I won’t spend 180 INR for sarabjit and all..on the contrary I would love to spend even 280 on airlift Fan and others..
Angry birds is a famous game, and this movie is especially for children. There is summer vacations across the country, that’s why Angry birds took better opening.
They provide better content than most Indian movies, apart from jungle book avengers they are original and not copied plagiarised nor even inspired which every Indian director says it’s blatant copy
it is obvious if ticket prices of every movie is same, viewer will obviously opt for the movie which gives real theatre experience not for the movie which can be seen on tv later. Movies like jungle book xmen doesnot give you the same pleasure while watching on TV or laptop and people know that, these movies are meant to be seen in theatre on the other hand Bollywood movies can be easily watch on TV or laptop without loosing anything.
