Two Imtiaz Ali films have opened well at the box office (Rockstar, Love Aaj Kal) and both had bankable stars (Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor). However, that doesn’t mean his name alone can’t bring in the audience to theatres. His latest release, an off-beat road movie starring a newcomer like Alia Bhatt has collected Rs 13.6 crore in its opening weekend.

Imtiaz + no superstar = 13.6 crore (Highway)
Imtiaz + Shahid = 6.8 crore (Jab We Met)
So basically not having any major actor in a film is better than signing Shahid for the same film.
Directors, dont sign Shahid. Instead of that dont sign any actor. It will be a bigger hit and budget will be less..
All his movies are good and there is a variation in story/genre and content..but collections are not that great except rockstar…He should consider doing movies with top stars..make them blockbuster’s and then work with small hero’s which will be good push to this career….
Only Jab we met sustain well despite poor openning also jab we met is the most loved film, love aaj kal open extra ordinary due to chatbuster music like yjhd, and love aaj kal is the biggest hit for both saif as well as imtiaz. Rockstar can’t sustain and failed to reach hit status, highway may miss hit tag.

@kartik not agree, because both Rockstar and LAK opening weekend was one of the best when the movie released due to respectable known starcast & poplar music+ both were non-holiday releases.
Jab we met & Socha naa tha opening wasn’t good but highway has still decent weekend.
Now, his next should have atleast 2.5 times bigger opening than Rockstar, even if it’s non-holiday release.

The director gained recognition only because of the sucess of JWM.

JWM was Imtiaz’s best and most liked than any other movie so far.
Jab We Met was his best film,it is a cult classic on television.

Collected 40crs,despite a below average opening.
Also it was released during the Pre Diwali period,which is considered a dull for the boxoffice..
It was released just 2 weeks before SRK’s much awaited Om Shanti Om,and still eventually became a HIT…
