Releasing Happy New Year on Friday was a masterstroke by Shahrukh Khan and his team, as opening day records give films tremendous publicity across print, television and social media. For first day records, getting the timing of the release right is important. If the opening day is not a holiday, it is almost impossible to break the previous records.
Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish in 2006 was the first film to collect Rs 5 crore on a single day. Two years later, Aamir Khan’s Ghajini collected more than 10 crores to become the first film in history to net 10 crore in one day, something that was unheard of back then.
A year later, Dabangg came and conquered the box office. Between 2010 and 2012 it was all about Salman Khan. Bodyguard shattered box office records with 20.6 crore on its opening day, a year later Ek Tha Tiger became the first film to do 30 crores of business.
Then came Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3, a film that broke every record on a working day. And now, about 10 months later, SRK’s Happy New Year has become the first film to cross 40 crore. In fact, Happy New Year just fell a few lakhs short of the 45 crore mark, something that it could achieve on Sunday.

also salman is the king of highest single day(4x) followed by HR(2x) and our so called king is the last one to enter from the top 4 star. hats off king. I am sure if k3 was released day after diwali like HNY it has grossed 40 cr.

@Suchit it’s not his fault if your fave can’t afford top heroines nor his usual producers. So chill man SRK has more than enough money to afford all Bollywood top heroines in one single movie don’t be jealous and also I don’t remember since when Red Chillies became a big banner? So could please enlighten us on that point with your hatred?

lots of people said earlier before realesing of movie that it is a foolish step by srk to don’t realising his movie on 23 which is hollyday instead of 24 a non hollyday and after collection everybody say that it was a holly day…. galti insaan se hoti h aur ushe except karne se insaan bada banta h so please from now you mention its a after diwali or nonhollyday or good day for business but not hollyday…..

@All: I am from Bangalore and work for a software company..both my parents are bankers working for Canara and Corp Bank respectively..i also have a school going sister..we all had a holiday yesterday..and my relatives here who work for different companies too had a holiday yesterday..even most of the schools were closed as well here..i too have friends from other companies..most of them had holiday and have gone to their hometown also most of the Karnataka state except government offices had holiday yesterday!!! Also my neighbours with whom I watched HNY had a holiday yesterday and they also work for a software company..Guess only a few states did not have a holiday!!! That’s my view!!!

@vytus, what do you mean aamir can’t afford big heroine. every heroines die to work for him. deepika, priyanka, and many other top heroines have expressed that I am desperately waiting to work with aamir. it’s honour to work with him. don’t write just anything for sake of your star. and b the way aamir also has his production house, but the difference is that he doesn’t produce these mindless movies, because he has talent and he doesn’t want to waste his talent unlike your star. look at the history, has srk given any all time blockbuster like ghajini or dabangg without big heroine or big production house?
