Happy Bhaag Jayegi Movie Review

Diana Penty made an impression on everyone with her debut movie Cocktail. That was a restrained performance, but the promos of Happy Bhaag Jayegi have shown Diana in a more vivacious and playful mood. Happy Bhaag Jayegi promises to be a lighthearted comedy movie with some romance on the mould of the Tanu weds Manu series. Does it deliver on the promises? Let’s find out now.

Story: Harpreet (Diana) likes her college friend Guddu (Ali Faizal) but she is supposed to be marrying a budding Punjabi politician Bagga (Jimmy Shergill) in Amritsar. So she adorns her running shoes on her wedding night and runs away. But the running plans go amock as she somehow ends up in Lahore. There she meets Bilal Ahmed (Abhay), the son of an influential politician. Does she end up finding her love and how does her landing up in Pakistan carry forward the story? An erratic climax provides all the answers.

Screenplay and Direction: Happy Bhaag Jayegi makes for a breezy comic caper which never trudges above the circumstances which lend themselves beautifully to the movie. A lot could have been done with the zany characters and situations, but the director somehow restrains from going overboard with anything. Mudassir Aziz keeps the fun elements intact and even though Happy Bhaag Jayegi isn’t a riproaringly funny comedy it manages to make the viewers smile from time to time. All this without making vulgar jokes or objectifying women.

Happy Bhag Jayegi Movie Review Movie Review

Happy Bhaag Jayegi intelligently makes the viewers believe that everything takes place in Lahore, mostly thanks to the smart production design and costume design. The detailing is actually pretty neat. The editing of Happy Bhaag Jayegi could, however, have been snappier. Some scenes overstay their course. The music of Happy Bhaag Jayegi suits the tone of the movie but none of the songs are of chartbuster material.

Acting: Even though Diana’s character is in the title, it is Abhay Deol who keeps the film together with his comeback. He is good and has the accent mastered to the tee. Diana Penty feels like a miscast because she is uneven and doesn’t do justice to the role of a spirtly North Indian girl like Kareena or Kangna. Ali Faizal doesn’t have a lot to do and his character feels a bit Hollow but he is charming. Jimmy Shergill almost reprises his role from the Tanu Weds Manu series and is perfect in his role as the innocently evil budding politician. Piyush Mishra provides the comic element to the movie. Momal Sheikh makes a good impression in her Indian debut.

Conclusion: Happy Bhaag Jayegi had potential to be a cult comedy because it is styled realistically and lends elements from Priyadarshan’s comedies. But it is held back by the director’s inability to go all the way and by the bad casting of its titular character. A better actress as Happy could have transformed the whole film. Happy Bhaag Jayegi, could still be enjoyed and liked for providing genuinely funny situations and dialogues. It doesn’t provide laughter all the way but it keeps smiles flowing.

Pros:

  • Funny situations and zany characters
  • Abhay Deol and the male leads are in good form
  • The production design and costume design is apt
  • The music is decent

Cons:

  • Diana Penty is miscast in her role
  • The editing is not brisk
  • The movie doesn’t realize its full potential

Rating: ★★★☆☆

  • @hrithik same thing we all thought after 2000-2009 disater decade of salu that after back to back flops not able to manage himself even top7 apna salu bhaag jayega but you know what banda itana dheet nikala ki kuch nhi toh south masala remake le kar aa gya ab batao jab 10 salo mai disaster dene k baad phir se jo aa sakata hai toh
Highest opening holder, weekend holder daring to facing 3 clash in his bad phase still manage to himself in top three how it’s possible ki wo bhaag jayega haha… beta ek toh eid bheek mai de kar ehasan kiya now ab gratitude dikhane ki jagah attitude dikha rahe ho sudher jao pata h tum kitane bade wale ho kyu daily proove karte ho ;)

  • Diana was good in the movie actually. It’s just that her role wasn’t very well written I think. Neither Kangana nor Kareena could’ve really done much better with such a badly written character, unlike Datto or Geet. Plus Diana’s very very pretty! Can’t take my eyes off her face!

  • First u supported srk and showed Your frustration by giving articles when raees was postponed… now u r again doing same for MJD… I bet u wouldn’t have posted articles if Sultan had moved or Rustom had flopped….. and more thing, u posted an article to show some condolence to MJD, Fan… but where were u when Talash (not flopped) disappointed on box office. Jai ho… (it collected more than 5th highest grossing film of SRK) but u never mentioned in any article about it… many films flopped but u didn’t even during Bombay Velvet there was no article…. This show ur love towards bollywoood oooopss sorry I mean toward SRK & HR… baaki sab aira gaira……..

now u should change its name from Indicine to SRKHRCine….

  • Many people asking to indicine why r they removed salmans article?
    Here is answer…?
Tiger zinda hein per koma main hein….

  • @fan pk : You missed me so much that without my comment on this page you are posting a reply to it. Bhai, kahan ka reply kahan post kar raha hai ?? Bheek ? You srk fans often proves that you do not belong to reality or on Earth. You always belonged to Pluto and Bakrapur where Eid was always belonged to one and only your queen. Salman created it and own Eid (on Earth and reality) so others make way for him, he dont need to ask anyone to give, opponents runs away from him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One year (2013) Salman ki movie hi nahi bani and you think Eid belongs to your queen ? BTW, your queen tried all 3 festive release still unable to give HGOTY. First ask him to cross 90 crs on non festival and give a 150+ crs on festival without Deepika then you cook up stories like SRK favoring Salman !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @indicine please post the latest poster of shivaay. It’s been out since 2 days but you haven’t posted it yet. Please do it as soon as possible. It’s the best poster so far.

  • Dear @indicine Plz Explain what do you mean By Completely Rejection.

This is for You First week Of MJD post.

In your Opinion a movie which Collects 50 cr in First week

    with almost 3000 Screens.
With Two Holidays in a week.
with the Face Value of Hrithik Roshan a Superhero.
    With Oscars Nominated Director.
With Oscars winner Musician AR Rahman.
With High Budget of 150 Cr. (Almost Triple of Rustom)
    With Universal Appealing Subject.
    With Historical Drama.
    With Epic War Theme.
    With Excellent Visual Graphics.
    With Most Awaited Movie TAG.

Some other Plus points of the Movie.

    Hrithik’s Comeback After two years.
    Last Movie was 140 Cr.
    Last Movie Was Clash winner
    Etc.

    Against
    A Lower Budget Movie.
    A Limited Appealing Subject.
    With A Lesser Screens Movie.
    A Niche Movie.
Thriller Zone Which is not a Guarantee of success.
Akshay Kumar’s 3 Movie in Last 7 month.
    Unknown Director.
    Director’s 2nd Movie.
Director’s Debut Movie was A debacle.
Movie Rustom Has No Repeat Value.
    Almost same Rating.

(If you think that The Movie is Superhit Because Salman Khan Promoted the movie. Then You should Know that Salman very well Promoted the movies of Others like HERO, Tarzan Teri, Tell Me O Khuda , Heroes, Hello, Sawan, Sanwaria, Ishq In Paris Etc. But all were Superflop Because Their story Was Bogus.)
Even though Akshay fans should thank Superstar Salman Khan and others for promoting Rustom.

Now tell me What is your Definition of Complete Rejection.

You should be a Genius Critics & Honest Writer of A site.

And yeah You Said In your Post That 100 Cr is not a big deal now a days.
But Two of the So called Biggest Superstar Failed to Cross that barrier In 2016.
And Akshay Kumar did it thrice in a year.

I am not anyone’s hater but I’m now biggest fan of Real Superstar @akshaykumar

  • @bollywood,superb comment man.
haters never respect akki, what ever he do,but fans like us always kick that morons by these comments.
    indicine,rustom is clear winner
and your favorite star srk going to his bad phase, his comeback is too hard.
srk only excells in romantic genre, but his age not suitable for romantic role now.
his contemperies like aamir, ajay and akshay are versatile and salman know how to connect with commen people without any versatality.
