Freida Pinto was the first choice for Madras Cafe: John Abraham

Madras CafeActor-cum-producer John Abraham has revealed in an interview to a local daily that Hollywood star Freida Pinto was the first choice for his second production Madras Cafe.

The actor, who last produced one of 2012’s best films Vicky Donor, said “Initially we approached Freida Pinto, who loved the script. But she had already committed to Woody Allen’s film and so couldn’t do Madras Cafe. She called me and said it is courageous of me to make a film like this, because India needs to see more films like that. I took it as a compliment and signed Nargis. After Freida, she was our only choice.”

Directed by Shoojit Sircar, Madras Cafe is a political spy thriller. John plays a RAW agent, while Nargis Fakhri plays an international reporter. The film has been shot across India and Sri Lanka.

Madras Cafe is scheduled to release in theatres on August 23rd 2013.
