Filmmakers are to be blamed for trying to bust 100 cr mark: Aamir Khan

Actors Aamir Khan and Deepika Padukone along with filmmaker Karan Johar descended here Friday to speak about the changes in Indian cinema.

The actors presented their views while Johar played the moderator at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit held at the Taj Palace Hotel.

The actor, who has earned the ‘perfectionist’ tag with films like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Taare Zameen Par’, said “cinema is going through a period of change and transformation”.

“The late 70s and 80s, which was the disco era, was disappointing. I feel that from the late 80s onwards, there has been a gradual change. The definition of mainstream cinema is constantly changing and has widened now. The audience is also changing,” Aamir said.

He, however, expressed disappointment over the trend of buying editorial space to garner positive reviews for upcoming movies and the rat race for soaring box office collections.

“The emphasis is more on box-office collection. I don’t blame the audience but the filmmakers. Top filmmakers and actors are selecting scripts to bust the Rs.100 crore mark. They are scared to experiment. But cinema is an art. Film should allow creativity and the story should rule the heart,” he said.

“There is also a trend of buying editorial space to promote films, which is wrong,” he added.
karan Johar noted the criticisms by the actor, and said: “Filmmakers and production house is to blame… point noted.”

Deepika, on the other hand, discussed how being an outsider from the film industry helped her grow and learn from her experiences.

“Not having a film background help me learn. Everything I have learnt is due to the time I have spent on the sets, through interactions and also by my mistakes. People talk about my successful films, but I have also given back to back flops. That phase has taught me a lot,” she said.

The actress spoke about how Bollywood objectifies men too.

“Men are also objectified but we choose not to talk about it,” she said.

The “Happy New Year” actress said she takes competition in a sporting spirit.

“Competition is good. It can be productive and we can learn a lot from it,” she said.

There were light moments during the session as well, with karan Johar asking Deepika how did Katrina Kaif perform in “Dhoom: 3”.

The back story is Deepika is Ranbir Kapoor’s former girlfriend and Katrina is rumoured to be dating the “Barfi!” actor. However, Deepika praised Katrina.

“I think Katrina is one of the most hardworking persons I have ever met. And I think she was fantastic in ‘Dhoom: 3’,” she said.

Another light moment was when Aamir interrupted Karan Johar for the second time, and the filmmaker said: “He (Aamir) is the new moderator and I am here only for glamour.”

Aamir also insisted that entertainment was not the end of their responsibility.

“Our responsibility is to create heroes, motivate people, touch the good and make you glow. It is to infuse fresh oxygen into this country,” he said.

  • Well said Aamir! We need to seriously end this phase of masala flicks now.. They are not bad.. Bt its been done n dusted for 5yrs nw.. Time to get back to content films which have a commercial value as well.. (eg – 3 idiots, my name is khan, barfi, etc)

  • Firstly we should always call our film industry as Hindi Film Industry and not call it bollywood. It’s not good to call bollywood.
Bollywood looks like a copy word from hollywood.
So friends don’t call our film industry bollywood. Always call as Hindi Film Industry and promote it every time.

  • Hahaha! According to our genious kid nipun, Hrithik fans the most sensible; & Akki & Salman fans r senseless. Great!
According to him, our wise Babaji is half senseless & half sensible coz he is half hrithik fan & half akki fan! Lol!

  • Itz easy to talk abt this kind of things(experimnt) nobody likes to b a failure success is the ultimate goal
big stars must rlese their movies on non fest time and give fest time for experimnt, youngstr movies/superstrs can exprmnt

  • Well said! Film markers are going crazy after numbers.

In the film industry, only these 2 guys are worth mentioning:

Respect Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Raju Hirani. They never post their collections for promoting their films. Their films are strong enough to become blockbusters!

Sadly a cunning fox named Bhagat tried to tarnish their reputation, and he is still dishing out 3rd rated pulp fictions while Hirani is all set to give us his 4 cult classic!

  • Farhan Akhtar,Ashutosh Gowariker, Rakesh Mehra, Raju Hirani, Zoya Akhtar, Shimit Amin, Sujoy Ghosh …..

Well, there are many more, but these guys have come up with interesting cinema which are both entertaining and commercial!

  • The sad part about this statement is some idiots will perceive it as, “See he is under-confident about pk. So he is saying we shouldnt look for collections”

It is only because of such morons good films are being criticized.

  • @Indicine. Kindly if u have do post arpitas reception pics at taj lands end.
Its learnt SRK had even attended and partied till late 4 in the morning with SALMAN. Both were dancing together as though no one were there with them with utmost craze. And when SALMAN took SRK to his mother it was an emotional scene. That’s what is said. Kindly do post that event Indicine.
    Waiting for Ur reply

  • Yes there ought to be movies which are experimental and also equally those which entertain the masses.
Because bollywood is incomplete without either of them.
There are film makers who for more mass appeal like Farah khan Rohit Shetty. Etc. But that ain’t any wrong
On the other hand there are film makers like Hirani s and Farhan akhtar
u need both to complete bollywood

  • @gj007 yes 2 states, kai pi che and d new half girlfriend r all 3rd rated novels/mvz.only ur aamir does gd work.I hate to criticise aanir bcz I luv but ncz of his 3rd rated fans like gj007 I was forced to write this

  • oh man why people want from salman to do art movies when people loves him in mass films there are many actors who are doing art films but today all top stars are doing masala movie because of salman but they should do art films as peoole can,t like their mass films.Salman is in his own league now he can,t do art films because his fans want him to dance ,to do action,to do happy films. As salman fans can,t see him to cry in onscreen or offscreen they always want salman in full form of dance ,action, heavy dialogue, that,s called true stardom.

  • THE PERSON WHO STARTED THIS (100CR CLUB) BULLLLL SHITTTT

NOW HE REALIZE THAT PAKI OR PK WHATEVER THE NAME IS NOT GOING TO CROSS 100CR LIKE TALASH THEN SUDDENLY HE TALKS ABOUT EXPERIMENTS….
