Filmfare Best Debut Awards Winners and their current standing

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan won the Filmfare Best Actor Debut award in 1989, Ajay Devgn won in 1992 and Shahrukh Khan won the same award in 1993. These four actors, along with Hrithik Roshan (2001) and Ranbir Kapoor (2008) continue to dominate the industry even today.

The film industry desperately needs more bankable stars and even though the likes of Sidharth Malhotra, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh have given the industry some hope, it remains to be seen if they can go on to match the super-stardom of the Khans, Hrithik, Akshay and others.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to look back at winners of the Filmfare Best Debut awards from 1989 to 2014, to see how many have survived the test of time in the industry.

Note: Akshay Kumar did not win the Filmfare Best Debut award, it went to Ajay Devgn that year. Abhishek Bachchan’s much-hyped debut in 2000 was literally swept away by the Hrithik tsunami.

Filmfare Best Debut Award Winners year-wise:

  • 1989: Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak) – Did a few good films in the 90s including a few blockbuster, but only got better with age. Currently, the most bankable star in the industry, a man that most people look up to. The trust that the audience have in Aamir films is something that most actors can only dream of.
  • 1989: Salman Khan (Maine Pyaar Kiya) – It has been a roller coaster ride for Salman. Unprecedented craze, extreme lows during the mid-2000s when his films didn’t even get a initial. More because of bad choices and favours that he regularly did for his friends in the industry. He could have so easily continued to do the same and fizzled away. But the biggest test for any actor is bouncing back from failures. Even his biggest of fans wouldn’t have predicted the kind of comeback that he has made. 6 of his last 7 films have been blockbusters. Enough said.
  • 1990: Not awarded
  • 1991: Not awarded
  • 1992: Ajay Devgn (Phool Aur Kaante) – Until he decided to do commercially viable films, Ajay was never really the biggest draw at the box office. Golmaal onwards, Ajay has consistently delivered 100 crore grossers. Most importantly, he has survived in the industry for 24 years now.
  • 1993: Shahrukh Khan (Deewana) – Shahrukh Khan is the biggest success story in the industry. Period. Not only did SRK rule the box office for years, he was the only attraction for the overseas audience for more than a decade. Only 5 outsiders without a godfather have won the Filmfare Best Award and amongst those only Shahrukh Khan has made it big!
  • 1994: Saif Ali Khan (Aashiq Awara) - The man who famously rejected Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Saif has been fairly successful in the industry, but could never make it big as a solo star.
  • 1995: Not awarded
  • 1996: Bobby Deol (Barsaat) – Bobby’s first few films did fairly well and he looked promising as an actor too, but completely faded away in the early 2000s.
  • 1997: Chandrachur Singh (Maachis) – He didn’t have the looks, yet managed to romance Aishwarya Rai in Josh. His performances were received well in films like Kya Kehna and Daag. However, in a mishap while holidaying in Goa, the actor suffered from multiple shoulder dislocations. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make a successful comeback.
  • 1998: Akshaye Khanna (Himalay Putra) – A fantastic actor who did a few terrific films. Couldn’t make it big. He hasn’t had a release since 2012.
  • 1999: Fardeen Khan (Prem Aggan) – Super looks, bad actor. Not good enough to make it big in the industry.
  • 2000: Rahul Khanna (1947 Earth) – Never appeared in conventional universally appealing Bollywood film in the first half of his career. When he did, it was too late.
  • 2001: Hrithik Roshan (Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai) – The only actor to win both the ‘Best Actor Debut’ and ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role’ in his debut year, Hrithik Roshan took the nation by storm in what will be remembered as the biggest debut in the history of Indian Cinema. After a dream debut, Hrithik had to go through the toughest phase of his career with back-to-back failures. But the fact that he never gave, worked harder after every failure, finally resulted in a huge comeback. After Koi Mil Gaya he hasn’t looked back.
  • 2002: Tusshar Kapoor (Mujhe Kuch Kehnaa Hai) – His debut film with Kareena Kapoor was the biggest surprise hit of 2001. All his solo films after that sunk without a trace at the box office.
  • 2003: Vivek Oberoi (Company) – Promising career. Aishwarya Rai. Press Conference. Salman Khan. End of the story.
  • 2004: Shahid Kapoor (Ishq Vishq) – A terrific actor with almost everything going for him, Shahid has probably suffered from being extremely choosy and the films that he did pick haven’t worked at the box office. But since he started so young, he still could make it big.
  • 2005: No awards
  • 2006: Shiney Ahuja (Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi) – His personal life has affected his profession. Did he have it in him to make it big as a solo hero? Probably not.
  • 2007: No awards
  • 2008: Ranbir Kapoor (Saawariya) – Regarded by many as one of the best actors in the industry today, Ranbir has a promising future ahead of him. Currently, he has the best line-up of films and will be working with directors like Rajkumar Hirani, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Basu. Has the potential to challenge the Khans and Hrithik in the near future.
  • 2009: Farhan Akhtar (Rock On!!) and Imran Khan (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) – The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar has done well so far. His solo-films have fared better than expected. On the other hand, Imran Khan has completed faded away. The disastrous response to Gori Tere Pyaar Mein was the biggest blow to his career.
  • 2010: No awards
  • 2011: Ranveer Singh (Band Baaja Baarat) - Too early to judge his career. Talented and has the screen presence needed to make it big.
  • 2012: Vidyut Jamwal (Force) – He out-shined John Abraham in Force. His next film was a solo-starrer Commando, which did reasonably well too. However, for some unknown reason, the industry hasn’t accepted him.
  • 2013: Ayushmann Khurana (Vicky Donor) – Delivered a super performance in 2013’s best film Vicky Donor, but has suffered major setbacks in Nautanki Saala and Bewakoofiyaan. He is young, has the talented and also has a few promising films lined up.
  • 2014: Dhanush (Raanjhanaa) – National winning Tamil actor Dhanush delivered a fantastic performance in his debut Hindi film Raanjhanaa. He will be seen in Shamitabh next.

  • Nice article.. Even though i am not a fan of Indian Awards since most of them are rigged (except national award).
Note- Please do an article filmfare awards on deserving winner vs actual winner (Example Aamir deserved for JJWS but Anil kapoor was actual winner for beta)

  • Khan of all seasons for me is Fardeen Khan. Prem Aggan was the funniest film of the century (After the legendary Gunda of course lol) Those who follow Kanan Gill’s reviews will know the reason :-D :-D

I like the way Indicine described Vivek’s career.

Promising career. Aishwarya Rai. Salman Khan. Press conference. End of the story ROFL :-D

  • Read the line – ”’ Has the potential to challenge the Khans and Hrithik in the near future. ”’
and here is the proof of that —
    1) fan raees collection=175cr-200cr
Which will be 1st week of bombay velvet/jagga jasoos.
    2) prdp=220cr bajrangi=205cr
    But
    tamasha=350cr , jagga=250cr , bombay velvet = 200cr.

@indicine thank you for confirming khans, hrithik are done and dusted before ranbir . Akki-ajay n others don’t come even in comparison !!

    • Tamasha, jaga jasoos, bombay velvet all are super flop… And remember bajrangi bhaijan world wide collection is 980+ crore.

  • In current generation, only Ranbir and Ranveer look capable to carry away their initial success. Still it’s too early to say that they will match the superstardom of Khans and Hrithik. Interestingly all Khans and Hrithik got the film fare for best debutant actor and they fairly justified that.
Expecting the same from Ranbir and Ranveer.

  • @alok nath it is unfair to call indian awards unfair.a great actor like leonardo hasn’t yet won an Oscar while a film like dark knight didn’t receive even a nomination for best film oscar category.similar in ppls choice award this year captain America or some other film won best action thriller ahead of interestellar.

I think v need to respect tge indian awards ayleast the likes of filmfare and iif

  • Since 2008 every actor who has received the award have been able to survive in the industry. But why were there no awards in 2007,2010.

  • @Alok Nath : And who are you or indicine to decide that which actor deserved it actually and which didn’t??
Indicine had made it clear many times in different articles that filmfare awards just don’t consider the acting but they also consider the commercial success of that particular movie. I don’t have much idea about what JJWS and Beta collected, but may be Beta would have been more successful than JJWS at that time. There is a nice article of indicine on how filmfare awardees get declared. I request you to go through that.

  • Vivek and Akshaye Khanna deserves another chance. Both of them are immensely talented but their choices of movies have let them down

  • ya indicine I totally agree with Alok Nath but again the fans of respective actors would keep on arguing that our actor was more deserving than your actor, your actor couldn’t act that good in that movie as good as our actor & so on, so all these would come down to one’s personal choices & prefences , like how I feel srk didn’t deserve to win as many as 50% of all the awards that he won but srk fans will say that srk was deserving of every award that he won and should have had won at least 1 award for every single movie that he acted in & even going to the extent that srk missed national award for his performance in Ra.1 Lol :D

Had salman been not involved in many unnecessary controversies, had he taken his career seriously & not selflessly helped many of his friends & co stars & had done much better movies , he could have had easily become the biggest superstar that Bollywood ever saw but he is still nevertheless one of the biggest Bollywood superstars of all time and as pointed out in this article no other superstar in the history of Bollywood had to suffer as much as salman and then bounce back & rise like phoenix, no other superstar in the place of salman including the self-made, ambitious & hard working srk could have come out shining like the Dabaang khan.

‘He is not the real winner who wins without taking a deadly blow & without falling down many times but he is the real winner who takes one blow after the other, keeps on falling down but then again tries getting up, then gets up on his feet, punches with all his energy , uses all his might & destroys his competitor totally, he is the real winner ‘ and that winner is our salman khan! Remarkable!

  • Interesting Article ! !
Ayushmaan Khurrana is a talented actor, but highly underrated!
I like Vivek Obrai’s acting too!
Hrithik’s debut will remain as the Best and Biggest Debut Ever.

  • “Shahrukh Khan is the biggest success story in the industry. Period”
Truth in just one simple sentence ?? King Khan ?
“Not only has he ruled the industry for years, he was the only attraction for Overseas audiences for more than a decade.”
    Baadshah ? Haters ? can’t see you from the top ! ?

  • akki didn’t got award man….feeling sad but he prove him self with his film…
    waiting for baby…
love u akki from fan of sallu n aamir…

  • Liked the most what u said about Ranbir and Farhan. And I personally think Akshaye Khanna was one of the best actors of his time. He was always very underrated. Loved his performances in Taal, DCH, Border, Hungama, Gandhi.

  • the majority of them have been successful in bollywood……dhanush has a great future ahead…he is extremely talented

  • I am feeling very sad for Akshya Khanna the most.He is brilliant actor and deserves the better career.I still loved his movies like border, dch, hungama, hulchul, humraaj and Race.
Very few actors can compete with Aamir with sharing screen space. But he outshined Aamir in some scenes of Dil Chahta Hai.Their reunion scene in the climax still remain one of the greatest scenes ever for me.
Next come vivek oberoi. He is talented had a good career start but his love affair with aish than fight with Salman made his career sinking. He was brilliant in shoot out and lokhandwala and K3.Hope his continuous

Vudhut Jamwal deserves better I haven’t seen force but he was superb in commando and special appearance in Bullet Raja.I want a very good career of him in Bollywood.
I loved Shiney Ahuja in Gangster. He was brilliant in that film but his personal sins did the damage.
Ranbir kapoor,Ranveer Singh, imran khan, dhanush had long to go.We can’t say Imran khan career end as we can’t predict how anybody can bounce back.

  • filmfake awards- SALMAN KHAN (Tere Naam): Salman may be riding the high wave today on films like Dabangg & Ready that do nothing to tap into his talent as an actor but long back he did a film that did just that. Tere Naam was almost autobiographical where Salman tore his heart out and showed it’s million pieces to the world. As Raadhey he actually played a male version of Radha pining for a drop of love. His pure submission and subsequent pain and insanity showed the scorching intensity that lay within him. (WINNER: Hrithik Roshan-Koi Mil Gaya)

  • No words is sufficient to describe the legacy of Aamir,Salman, srk,Ajay,hr as their career speak themselves and the affection if audience they had speak that.Only akki missed the best debut award because he debut same year when Ajay did and all know how big Phool Aur kaante was that year.
Shaahid also had everything for a superstar but he failed to achieve that and I don’t think he will able to make big in future too.But we can’t predict anything.
Today I watching kick again and noted that why devi became devil. In those scenes with counter with little child jhumki Salman not able to emote very well which other actor can do better but he still had the persona that scene will still attach you because we know that Salman really feel for that child. This is charisma of Salman. He is only superstar having least acting abilities than any superstar in Bollywood but he Single alone is able to defeat others.
Every actor became superstar due to their charisma, acting and good films.Salman on other hand is mystery that what made him mega star and always remain but I think because he is peoples Man.Respect.

  • @goutam beta was blockbuster in 1994, while jjws was average but if only commercial success was trademark than I don’t think why Salman didn’t get for hahk in 1994 which was biggest hit ever even today when inflation adjusted but Nana patekar got for krantiveer.
If only bo performance need to count than I don’t think why Anupam kher got for saransh and Nasser 3 times in 1980-90.Awards was always remain arguable and will remain too.Aamir got his first best actor award for raja Hindustani which was below average film which became atbb and his performance also wasn’t among his top 10.

  • @Yuvraj, that was a bad luck of Salman. His best Performance of his career came in the same Year when HR also delivered one of his best performance of his career. Hro’s Performance was more acclaimed both critically and commercially. The other good acts were by SRK in KHNK and Ajay in Gangajal.

  • Dhanush is extremely talented… He is south superstar… Ranveer singh also had good future… Waiting for shamitabh…

  • love u sky for feel emotional part of kick which is almost compare to his tere naam performence. others can enjoy jumme ki raat or action scenes but for me real kick of the kick is those jhumki and devi’s scenes.

  • Mr.Zeeshan you are the height of overconfidence! Shahrukh khan is one of the worst actors in the history of cinema. Go and watch Robert Di-Niro or Tom Hanks to understand what is acting. This Shahrukh khan is hamming since 20 years and pathetic fans like you help him garner crores and crores of money.

Watch Hollywood classics or Indies to understand acting.

  • KING KHAN RULED FILMFARE.

HE is the GLOBAL MEGASTAR with out the help of any filmy papa/chacha.HE is the BIGGEST HEARTTHROB of the nation from 1992-2014 and ruled his generation while amir gave flops before 2000 and salman’s after 2000 and BIGGEST HEARTBEAT of Overseas audience.

  • Only Ranbir Shahid Sidarth are capable to become bankable superstar rest of others will reamain supporting actor.

  • Indicine You are posting exciting articles everyday this is quite exciting . Best Debut Award is a very important award because it motivates the actor to do better and improve himself . All the actors that have received this award all have become Huge Stars – Aamir, Salman, Ajay, SRK, Hrithik and Ranbir . Except Akshay who did not win Best Male Debut . Some actors won this award because of their performance in the first movie .
Saif Ali Khan – He was never a star in 90’s . In 2001 DCH was released and that was the turning point of his career . After DCH he has given some brilliant performances in KHNH, Hum Tum, Omkara, Parineeta, Race and Aarakshan . In recent times because of poor choices he has been criticised . I hope with Phantom he can make a solid comeback . If i am not wrong he has not given any Blockbuster in his life
Bobby Deol – He is the son of a brilliant actor and Box Office Sensation Dharmendra and the younger brother of the HE Man Sunny . His start was superb with Barsaat . He could not catapult in to the big league . He has given brilliant performances in Humraaz and Soldier .
Chandrachur Singh – I have seen Maachis and Josh . He was superb in Maachis .
Akshaye Khanna – I actually feel he is an underrated actor . He has done few films . He has shown his talent in films like Border, Humraaz, Dil Chahta Hai, Hulchul, Deewaangee, Gandhi My Father and Race .
Fardeen Khan – His father was a star of his times Feroz Khan . I think his choices were pretty bad . The only amazing performance of Fardeen was in No Entry .
Rahul Khanna – Actually i have not seen 1947 Earth but i have heard that it is a brilliant movie . It was based on the Partition of India and Pakistan . Aamir and Nandita have also given brilliant performances .
Tushar Kappor – Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai is a good movie . I have enjoyed this movie . In this movie he was really good . He was never a brilliant actor . He was also entertaining in Golmaal and G3 .
Vivek Oberoi – Actually i feel he is the most unluckiest actor . He has given some brilliant performances . He was superb in Company, Saathiyaa, Shootout At Lokhandwala, Rakhta Charitra and Krrish 3 .
Shahid Kapoor – Ishq Vishq was a good movie . Shahid has made some poor choices in his career . But i have to agree that his performance in Haider is truly splendid and praiseworthy . According to me it is the Best Performance of 2014 . He should definitely win awards for Haider . I will be really happy for him .
Shiney Ahuja – I have not seen Hazaaron Khwaishien Aisi but i have heard it is a Outstanding movie . He had a bright career with movies like Gangster, Woh Lamhe and Bhool Bhulaiya . His personal feel destroyed his career .
Farhan Akhtar – He has always been a brilliant director without any doubt . He has given us DCH and Lakshya . Rock On was a good movie and his performance was good . His performance has improved with each movie . He was very good in KCK and ZNMD . He was perfect in BMB . It is one of the best performances in recent years .
Ranveer Singh – He was absolutely brilliant in BBB . He has given brilliant performances in Ram Leela and Lootera . I am waiting for DDD .
Vidyut Jamwal – He was superb in Force . I have not seen Commando completely . He had a short role in Bullett Raja . He is brilliant in action . He has to improve his acting .
Ayushmaan Khurrana – Vicky Donor was one of the best movies of 2012 . He was amazing in VD . I think he will bounce back with Hawaizaada which will be a brilliant performance and a brilliant film .
Dhanush – Last but not the least . He is not handsome . He is a very good actor . He was magical in Raanjhanaa . I don’t think i have not seen such a debut performance for a long time . He will again show his talent with Shamitabh in which he is playing Deaf and Mute .
Other actors like Siddharth, Varun and Arjun can also become big stars . Despite the fact that they have not won Best Male Debut .
