Filmfare Best Actor Awards 1954 to 2014

Filmfare Awards is the second most prestigious award in the industry after the Indian National Awards. Part of the reason is history, Filmfare is the oldest awards in the Hindi film industry. Out of more than 20 categories and trophies presented each year, the Filmfare Best Actor Award is something that the entire industry and fans look forward to. It’s also the most fiercely competed and discussed category, as those nominated for the Best Actor award are usually a combination of immense popularity and talent. Filmfare Popular awards, in itself, is 50% audience voting and 50% jury.

Some facts:

  • Dilip Kumar has been nominated 19 times and won 8 awards. The legend is also the only actor to win 3 back to back awards. His conversions of receiving a nomination to winning an actor, is by far the best.
  • Shahrukh Khan has been nominated 34 times (all categories) and has won the Best Actor award 8 times, a record which he shares with Dilip Kumar.
  • Amitabh Bachchan has been nominated for a record 29 times but has won just 5 awards.
  • Hrithik Roshan has been nominated 12 times and has won 4 trophies. Hrithik is the first and only actor to win both the Best Actor and Best Debut awards in the same year (for Kaho Na Pyaar Hai). And the first actor to win both the Best Actor critics and popular award (for Koi Mil Gaya).
  • Rajesh Khanna has received 14 nominations and has won just 3.
  • One of the biggest superstars in the industry, Salman Khan has received the ‘highest number of nominations without winning’. Some of his notable losses are to Jackie Shroff in 1989 (Maine Pyaar Kiya), Shahrukh in 1995 (Karan Arjun) and Hrithik in 2003 (Tere Naam).
  • Aamir Khan has won the Filmfare Best Actor award twice, but he refused to accept the award for Lagaan in 2001 and doesn’t attend any Indian award ceremony.
  • Among stars who are currently popular, Ajay is the only actor to win both National Awards and Filmfare Awards. The other name is Amitabh Bachchan. The Khans, Hrithik and Ranbir have never won a National award. Akshay Kumar is probably the most popular actor, who even has quite a few critically acclaimed performance, but has never won a National or Filmfare Best Actor award.

  • hum dil de chuke sanam was much appriciated film then kuch kuch hoota ha by critics and also box office.
also hum apke hain kon was much bigger on box office then ddlj

I just want to know how much yash ji and srk give to the filmfare for these awards

  • No akshay..feel happy for others..dis year akki will get nominations for baby and brothers..Rest of the things god knows..good luck akki..We love you Akshay Kumar

  • who cares about awards by far bhaijaan Salman is the biggest superstar and public loves much more than these winners then what,s the use of awards.proud of u bhaijaan.

  • films like tera naam/ham apke hain kon /and hum dil da chuke sanam are not on the list .so we can easily understand what is the meaning of these awards. bt confuse about the prize of it .how much it cost . cause i want to buy one also

  • All deserved awards except Amir- raja Hindustani , srk- DTPH, hritik- dhoom2
@indicine rishi kapoor was first actor to win ff on debut for bobby not hritk

Amitabh and Rajesh khanna were just unlucky because their great performance came in same year like mukaddar ka Sikander, don and trishul released same year and he just won for don. Same for Rajesh khanaa

Between superb article after long time.

  • Ajay Devgn deserved for Zakhm. But sadly, he didn’t get.

Salman’s career best performance was Tere Naam which was remake of a Tamil film. He was beaten by Hrithik’s Koi Mil Gaya performance which was one of the best performances of Hrithik.

Akki never deserved an award. He didn’t win though.

  • Hrithik is the first and only actor to win both the Best Actor and Best Debut awards in the same year (for Kaho Na Pyaar Hai). And the first actor to win both the Best Actor critics and popular award For (Koi Mil Gaya.)

  • Well out of the current lot, Hrithik seems the one who can make it the highest awards and beat Dilip Kumar and SRK.
However till 2009 only he had 4 Best actor trophies, after that its been a dry spell for him. But Mohenjo-Daro should end this wait.
He deserved 2 more trophies but he didn’t got them as those movies were not commercially successful- Lakshya and Guzaarish. Had these movies been a hit Hrithik would had 6 trophies till now. But still considering his age, currently he is the best we have got. He should rule box-office both in terms of collections and awards in upcoming years.

  • @indicine: correct the list.
    It’s not 2013: Farhan and 2014: Shahid.
    It’s 2013: Ranbir(Barfi) , 2014: Farhan and 2015: Shahid

  • @indicine Ranbir Kapoor won the Filmfare best actor award twice once in 2011 for rockstar and second for barfi in 2012

  • Great and next Year SRK is going to be ahead of Sir Dilip Kumar, with FAN and Raees Coming He will be The king of FilmFare Awards as well!!!!

  • Indicine your list ended up incorrectly…
    2013—-Ranbir Kapoor for Barfi
    2014—Farhan Akthar for BMB
    2015—Shahid Kapoor for Haider

  • hrithik deserve atleast 1 national award…he has jodha akbar, KMG, Guzarish to name a few…

  • @Indicine
    2013: Ranbir Kapoor : Barfi
2014: Farhaan Akhtar: Bhag Milkha Bhag
    2015: Shahid Kapoor: Haidar….

    Please correct the data….

  • SRK will have 9 filmfare awards after Fan and Raees. And will surely become the first and only actor to have 10 filmfare awards. :)

  • Hate it love an star one thing is for sure give them credit when DUE!!

    *Hats off Shah rukh khan!!
*Hats off Hritik roshan!!! Incredible filmfare

*Aamir Excellent.. u don’t have to attend d occasion don’t worry they will bring them down to u!!

*Rhanbir honestly that required real guts to brush off d huge opponents u had. Kudos!!

    * LEGEND Amitabh Dilip late Rajesh what do I say??……speechless!!

*Ajay what else can I ask for when ppl bashes u I just laugh. What a RECORD only Amitbh Sir n U share n if set*

    *@indicine,
It’s unfair to say akshay has FEW critically acclaimed performance in his 23years career!! After already saying He is d only OUTCAST among d BIG GUNS!!(bolle toh na FILMFARE na NATIONAL)

  • SRK has been the most lucky as he never deserved the no. of awards he has got. Here’s an analysis
    1) Baazigar- Sanjay dutt deserved it for Khalnayak but his 1993 case, filmfare thought better not to give Sanjay.
    2) DDLG- the very reason why Aamir does not attends award shows. How bigger your film is does not matter its the performance that counts at the end. Aamir deserved it for rangeela but actor of more successful film got the award.

    3) DTPH- either Anil for viraasat or Kamal hasan for chchi 420 deserved it. But again actor of a more successful film got it.
    4) KKHH- SRK got lucky as Ajay got national award for Zakhm but since no commercial success, Ajay was left out.
    5) Mohabatein (Critics Award)- this year was the year when SRK finally got beated by the deserving new comer Hrithik. But still just to please him they gave him Critics award. Wow filmfare. Anil Kapoor won national award for pukaar but since you cannot dissapoint SRK you gave it to him. Either Anil or even Hrithik for Fiza should have got critics as both performances were top notch.
    6) Devdas- again lucky. Ajay got National award for Bhagat Singh but again no commercial success means no Award.
    7) Swades- again Saif gets national award but is not even nominated in best actor category. And SRK gets it for a flop film. Also this year had Lakshya been successful Hrithik would been a strong contender. But in any case this was Saif’s award. Watch Hum-tum to see why.

    8) Chak de India- again young Darsheel safari was bluffed given critics award as a toffy when he deserved popular one. Filmfare can never forget SRK and specially when it comes from Yashraj camp.

    9) My Name is Khan- most overated role by SRK but still gets award. Why I call it overacting just compare Hrithik of KMG and you will understand. Again this was Hrithik’s award for Guzaarish but no commercial success means no award unless you are SRK. Also by popularity this was Salman’s year. Dabangg made it big and may be Salman was a better option than SRK.

So here it is. Its an analysis that Filmfare has been bias towards SRK. You may not agree with all but you cannot also disagree with all. However with much better performances coming now a days and SRK doing films only to make money HNY and Dilwale I can’t think of him getting an award again. And its good that better performances get it rather than the Filmfare favourite SRK.

  • @Salman
Really Hum dil de chuke sanam??
Ajay for sure..1st half belonged to Salman 2nd half was Ajay all through.
I think Ajay won people’s heart more than Salman between his acting as Vanraj was pure class. My 1st time I witnessed 2 stars of d same movie nominated for Best actor!
