Dostana to Shaandaar: Dharma Productions completes 35 years

Founded by Yash Johar in the year 1980, Dharma Productions has completed 35 years in the industry.

The company’s first production was Raj Khosla’s Dostana (1980) starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman in the lead. The film went on to be the highest grosser the year.

Other noteworthy films from the banner are Duniya (1984) and Agneepath (1990) which won Amitabh Bachchan his first National Award.

But it was Karan Johar’s directorial debut in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in the lead, that marked Dharma’s rise to prominence in the year 1998. The film went on to be the biggest blockbuster for the company.

They followed it up with films like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’, ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’, ‘My Name Is Khan’, ‘Student Of The Year’, ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Agneepath’ (remake) and many more films, most of which were hugely successful at the box office.

Karan Johar tweeted “It’s #35YearsOfDharma today.. my fathers goodwill and his blessings are my biggest strength.. the company stands on his vision today.. I thank every member of the dharma family for their love, loyalty and commitment to the company…”

The man who featured in the first Dharma film, Amitabh Bachchan, tweeted “35 years of ‘Dostana'”
