Deepika Padukone’s Open Letter on Cleavage row

Deepika Padukone has written a open letter on her Facebook page clearing the air on the cleavage row that hit headlines last weekend.

There is only ONE sign that a woman wants to have sex and that is that she says “YES”.

The reason I write the above line is because we all know that in India we are so desperately trying to make a change in the way sections of our society think in order to move towards a happier world devoid of inequality, rape, fear and pain.

I am not naive about my own profession; it is one that requires lots of demanding things of me. A character may demand that I be clothed from head to toe or be completely naked, and it will be my choice as an actor whether or not I take either. Understand that this is a ROLE and not REAL, and it is my job to portray whatever character I choose to play convincingly.

What my concern is and I am stating it clearly so it is not misconstrued or confused with Shahrukh’s 8-pack or any other woman’s or man’s anatomy. I have spoken out against an ideology that such regressive tactics are still being employed to draw a reader’s attention at a time when we are striving for women’s equality and empowerment.

In a time where women should be applauded for making headway in a male-dominated society,we blur the lines between REEL and REAL life and dilute all our efforts by making a one-year old back sliding piece of news a headline. Digging out an old article and headlining it “OMG: Deepika’s Cleavage Show!” to attract readers is using the power of influence to proliferate recessive thought.

When an actresses inner wear decides to do a “peek-a-boo”,she most definitely did not step out with the intention to do so. So instead of zooming in, circling it and pointing arrows at it, why don’t we give her some ‘respect’ and let it go instead of making it ‘headlines’!? Are we not human? Yes, we marvel, envy and drool over a male actors 8pack abs in a film, but do we zoom in on the mans ‘crotch’ when he makes a public appearance and make that ‘cheap headlines’??!!

I have no issue celebrating my body and I have never shied away from anything on-screen to portray a character. In fact my next character portrayed is a bar dancer (sorry Farah for the spoiler!) who titillates men as a means to support her livelihood. My issue is you propagating the objectification of a REAL person, and not a character being played. Sure, dissect my characters if you wish — if it is of so much interest then discuss the character’s cup size and leg length if it is relevant to making the role convincing. All I am asking for is respect as a woman off-screen.

It is not about breasts, penises, or any other body part being reported. It is a matter of context and how out-of-context the reportage is just to sell a headline. And more so during a time in dire need of an attitude shift towards women.

For me this topic ends here. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I have little interest to take this further as it might get more attention than it deserves and might be further misconstrued and twisted to sell more undeserved headlines.

Having said that, please may we show love, dignity and respect to each other.

Live well, laugh often and love much.

  • Deepika is right and she can wear sweater all the time in happy new year but we want our king to show us his 10 packs frequently in the film

  • No matter media always want to attract people by spreading rumor but the truth is that SRK is the king of bollywood n DEEPIKA is the queen of bollywood.

  • yes am damn sure with dp about the unwanted chillies of headlines that many times TOI published , and there is no need to be. media is nowadays only wanted trp’s of their subjective initiatives by pointing out our celebs, they have their personal life too. just publish the positives of their hard work, commitment to their work and all about their success , so that society will get a message to go ahead from these nonsense.

  • Really true. Deepika is right. And those who call all of this monotonous. get this. Things dont go away just becos you are bored and that this is someone elses problem.

you have to take in out head on.

And mr. Afsal ahmed. aap kuch kuch jagah sahi hai. Baki samaj nahi aaya. But you made an effort.

    Deepika way to go.

Be angry and dont let all of this stride along without being slapped up here.

  • I respect Deepika’s profession and her honesty. She is one of my favorite actress who has lots of potential to bring respect for the women of Hindustan by choosing her roles carefully for the big screen in the future !

We know that the celebrities are treated as role models and gods by our younger generations. What they see their stars doing on the big screen may be unreal for the star, but for a kid that is a real and normal behavior !

In ancient times, Hindu religion and Rishis were molding our countrymen and politics, but in the modern world, the Bollywood plays an important role in molding the character of both young and old generations. The soap opera on TV may be unreal, but the human mind that is controlled by senses gives in easily to the pleasures, and the problems from screen eventually enters into family life and the society.

Children try to imitate by acting and dressing up like their favorite stars. Family up-bringing, Non-Veg Food, and many low class Bollywood movies are partly the reasons why men in this country has gone very low to create a macho image who harasses every girl that comes across his way !

In movies we see and learn that when she says NO that means YES, and more batamis a hero is, at the end, only he gets the heroin ! So the movie portrays that it is normal to treat women as an object of pleasures only.

Actors and actresses gets an easy way out of explaining bad behavior or low class role on the screen by saying that it’s just a movie and it is not real. It’s sad that they will play such a low class role not knowing what effects of their karma will bring into our society.

After this bar dancer scene goes live on big screen, many guys will probably imitate one more scene in their real life and will titillate ( excite erotically ) girls on the dance floor. I just pray that our women, mothers, daughters and sisters are not treated like a bar dancer on our streets by bad bunch of disrespectful batamis guys !

Movie stars have a right to reject a role if they want to. Hopefully they will remember our Bapu’s message… “Be the Change that you want to see in this world” – Mahatma Gandhi

    Thank you
