Dangal vs Bajrangi Bhaijaan: Box Office Collection Comparison

The industry is going through a phase where two men are at the top of their form and the rest simply haven’t been able to match up. It’s Salman Khan and Aamir Khan at the top of the Bollywood ladder, there is little to choose between the two as far as the big grossers are concerned, but the rest have a lot of catching up to do.

The fall of Shah Rukh Khan (FAN) and Hrithik Roshan (Mohenjo Daro) in 2016 has further widened the gap between the Top 2 and the next 2. Akshay Kumar’s rise this year has made 2017 an exciting year for the trade and box office enthusiasts, as it promises to be a hugely important year for almost all the bankable stars in the industry.

However, to put the domination of Aamir and Salman into perceptive, Sultan and Dangal have managed to beat Mohenjo Daro in 2 days, FAN in 3 days and Akshay Kumar’s highest career-grosser in just 4 days.

The way Dangal is performing at the box office, it can only be compared to four films – Dhoom 3, Sultan, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK.

On this page (which will be updated everyday) we will be following and analysing the day-wise box office collections of Dangal and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

It’s a very interesting comparison because both films released on Friday and both held on strongly on Monday. Both were high on emotions, struck a chord with the audience across the country and are showing outstanding trends.

Day 1: Bajrangi Bhaijaan released during the Ramzan (Pre-Eid) period, due to which the first day collections of the film was affected. Dangal had the advantage of Christmas or winter vacations at several schools and offices in the country. There is not much to choose between the two – Bajrangi Bhaijaan sold more tickets on Day 1, while Dangal managed to collect about 10% more. Credit should go to Aamir Khan for pulling off 30-crore opening with a less commercial looking film, without a female lead, a not-so-well-known director. Dangal was riding on Aamir’s credibility alone and that was good enough for the audience to line-up at theatres. Winner: Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Day 2: The second day was the big holiday for Eid for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, while for Dangal it was a normal Saturday with Christmas festivities continuing across the country. Again, not much to choose between the two, but Dangal did phenomenally well after a strong start. It probably has the edge too as Bajrangi Bhaijaan had a huge holiday for Eid. However, the Salman Khan film still managed to sell about 15-20% more tickets. Winner: Dangal

Day 3: The third day, which was a holiday for both Sunday and Christmas, proved to be a game-changer for Dangal. The holiday for Christmas probably gave the film an extra 5% advantage over a Sunday, but Dangal was running at over 90% occupancy at multiplexes throughout the day. Winner: Dangal

Day 4: Bajrangi Bhaijaan continued its dream-run on Monday with the Eid advantage continuing to benefit the film. The advantage was probably around 15%, which is evident from the big drop on the next day. Most multiplexes were selling tickets at weekend rates. Dangal was super-strong too. At the end of four days, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had collected 129.65 crore, while Dangal has collected 132.43 crore. Winner: Dangal

Day 5: Dangal was extraordinary on its 5th day too, beating Bajrangi Bhaijaan once again. It’s becoming clearer that the trend is set to take Dangal higher than the Salman Khan starrer. The Eid advantage had ended for Bajrangi Bhaijaan, while Dangal continues to take advantage of the extended Christmas – New Year weekend. At the end of Day 5, Dangal is ahead by Rs 4.47 crore. The lead is widening! Winner: Dangal

Day 6: The lead widened further. Dangal has now beaten Bajrangi Bhaijaan by 3.41 crore. The extraordinary run of ‘Baahubali’ was having an impact on the business of the Kabir Khan directed film, but Dangal has no competition. The difference at the end of 6 days is Rs 7.88 crore. Winner: Dangal

Day 7: Dangal has won the first week by a fair margin. It did not have extra holidays, but the lingering advantage of Christmas / Winter holidays throughout the week was there. Yet, no other non-Aamir Khan film has taken advantage of the Christmas period. Tees Maar Khan failed, while Dabangg 2 and Don 2 show poor trends after a very good opening. The first week lead for Dangal over Bajrangi Bhaijaan is Rs 12.89 crore. In fact, the 7-day collections of Dangal is more than what Bajrangi collected in 8 days. Winner: Dangal

Day 8: The lead is getting seriously big now, which also means even a total of 400 crore is not out of reach for Dangal since it has so many open competition-free weeks. The gap on the 8th day is Rs 5.79 crore, with the overall difference at the end of 8 days at a whopping Rs 18.68 crore. This makes a total of 340 crore plus a certainty, which will make Dangal the highest grosser of all time. Winner: Dangal

The graph below shows the difference and how Dangal has taken a substantial lead after the first weekend – which is widening with each passing day.

  • @ Aman patel : Why are you chanting about Overseas now ? FYI …. Both Salman and Aamir movies has grossed sRK’s highest grosser in overseas. If you still think Overseas is important let me ask why Swades is listed as Average (Domestic verdict) in SRK’s filmography despite being Super Hit in Overseas ? And why Chak De India is listed as Blockbuster despite being Average in overseas ? Move on from past glories and face the reality. In that case, Salman was the first to take overseas market to storm with huge success of HAHK, do you agree ?

  • The success of Dangal shows India is indeed large-hearted and charitable. But, it gives its love, respect and, even hard-earned money, only to those who deserve it, not those who demand it as a token of acceptance of their misguided agendas to boycott the master piece called Dangal!!!!!

  • Myopic comparism during Xmas e everyday is like a holiday cos schools r closed a s there is a feeling of enjoyment prevalent from 20th till the new yr, how can u discount such a huge advantage.

  • SRK fans better to not think that much about Raees collection. Since you guys said he’s the only super megastar on this planet so he can easily beat Aamir Khan’s all records.

But think about the content first. No need to argue that audiences trust AK more than SK even tho you said AK has no stardom or whatever it is. SK needs to learn from AK how to pick good script. Audiences need quality that entertain them, give positive impact , not solely because of the presence on screen. What’s the point of the collection if your movie is dull? People will forget it in a second easily

  • if christmas was on monday then collection have gone to sky high & it was purely show of aamir’s sheer stardom. no one hoping as with a less commercial movie, widout actress, demonitisation effect, masala genre it will trend so well. but personally i liked bajrangi bhaijaan more as it was best film of salman. tubelight will be content film & it will also trend like that. & if tzh shaped well then 400cr is sure. and thug is also coming which will prove the diwali festivals lucravity. so tubelight, tzh, thug of hindostan will surely shake the box office.

  • In divine u r baised coz 4 da first three days BB sold more tickets than dangal, collections r high 4 dangal coz of high rates of tickets. Now u know who is clear winner

  • Dangal’s worst scenes where coach try to teach geeta. Acting and story both manipulated and i am sure that were not true in real phogat story.

  • @indicine
    where is your
article on jolly llb 2 audience and trade response ?
    I think you forgot…..;)
you have said to do it on monday or tuesday in your Q n A session…..

  • Finally i am back to indicine after a long long time. I still cant remember when was the last time i commented here. I think it was in july or august when i left indicine due to my busy days which i never expected to last so long..now coming to dangal, i feel it is best movie since 3 idiots and Bajrangi bhaijaan. So deserves such collections. I am expecting 345 cr-350 cr as i want to be as realistic as possible after looking at such trends and 3 open weeks. But anything possible. Box office is unpredictable. Wish you all happy holidays and have a great 2017.

  • @ Indicine.

Good comparision. But, I would say BB is still ahead, considering it had a big competition in Bahubali which was running to packed houses already. Further, Eid period is nowhere close to the Xmas holidays.

If you exchange the holidays, then BB could have easily gone past 350 cr as the footfalls of BB were fare more than PK was and with extended holiday period across the nation it would have been even higher, and possibly a collection of around 375cr.

All said and done, Salman is the biggest crowd puller and Aamir is the biggest bet the industry can rely on.

With great content both of them have the potential to collect 400 cr+.

All others have a lot of catching up to do. I would put my bets on the younger generation in future to break all these records, or it has to be a multi-starrer movie with a big banner to break these records. May be a Ajay+Akshay+Two Top Heroines with a brand like Dhoom or Hro+Ranveer/Ranbir with two top heroines with a Krrish brand could come close.

  • @Detroit loves SRK,
Even I want some articles on the content of the movies but it will not
attract much readers bcuz fans here only talk about collections, collections and collections

  • Similar to Chakde India.. Shahrukh trains girls, and in this film Aamir trains his daughters.. but for me Chakde was a better film, loved it more.

  • I really feel bad for srkians. yaar tum log to aise khus ho rahe ho jaise srk ne 350cr crore cross kar liya hai.. Its like Bangladeshis are happy because West indies cricket team has won a match against India.

  • Dangal is doing a ‘3 idiots’ ie exceeding even the wildest of expectations…!

350cr is a formality now but can it get to 400cr… I pray it does

  • Dangal is getting bigger bigger and more bigger. I have seen the film and that’s my favorite movie of amir sir

  • Any parameter Mr. Perfectionist will prove it weather it’s box office, critics, acting, script, co.-actors, direction, or message of the movie etc.
    No match at all ….

lOVE YOU MR RAGHU, RAJ, wansuk, rajo pk or manager … all are my favourite
