Controversial box office collections of Krrish 3 – Our take!

Article first published on November 11 2013

Ever since Krrish 3 released in theatres, the comments section on our website and Twitter timeline have been flooded with questions related to the box office collections of the film — Why is there such a huge difference between numbers released by independent trackers like Box Office India (BOI) and the producers of the film? Is BOI trust-worthy? Since quoting a record-breaking figure for the opening day and weekend, results in free-publicity across all news channels and social media, how can figures released by a production house be trusted – after all, with millions at stake with a film like Krrish 3, the producers can quote any figure that they want to!

Below is a quick comparison between the 10 day collections of Krrish 3 released by 3 different sources.

  • Box Office India website: Rs 153 cr in 10 days (excluding collections from Telugu and Tamil versions)
  • Box Office India Magazine: Rs 171.47 cr in 10 days (excluding collections from Telugu and Tamil versions)
  • Filmkraft Productions: Rs 194 cr in 10 days from Hindi, Rs 206.35 including Telugu and Tamil.

Here’s how, we think, each source tracks their figures

1. BoxofficeIndia.com were the first to release All-India figures, which is probably why they are considered to be a trust-worthy source within the industry and by fans. In fact, a lot of well-known trade analysts use figures released by BOI and claim those numbers to be their own! The 202 crore lifetime figure of 3 Idiots was first released by the trade website, which was universally accepted as ‘actuals’ of the 2009 Rajkumar Hirani blockbuster.

BOI releases daily figures based on collections from a few theatres in various circuits, which is then compared to other films with a similar release size. For example, sample figures of Krrish 3 will be compared to Chennai Express, as both films released on approximately 3700 screens across India. Since they probably have contacts with top distributors, they are also well-aware if a film is under-performing or record-breaking in one or more circuits. In short, around 20-25% of collections are tracked on a daily basis for bigger films, the final total is just a guess estimate which isn’t always very accurate.

Have their figures always been reliable? No, not really. When Hrithik Roshan’s Jodhaa Akbar released, they declared the film a ‘Super-Hit’ with All-India collections of around 63.5 crore net. But on the new version of their website, they’ve reduced the total to Rs 59 crore and also changed the verdict to ‘Semi Hit’. The difference between the two verdicts is huge.

Screen captures from 2008 and 2013 below.

Jodha Akbar declared Super Hit

Verdict is now Semi-Hit

Verdict is now Semi-Hit

Jodhaa Akbar is not the only film though. They declared Om Shanti Om as the biggest grosser of all-time at Rs 85.79 crore net. A couple of years later, they deducted more than Rs 6 crore from its total, making it the second highest grosser after Dhoom 2 (Screen captures below). Even the figures of Jab Tak Hai Jaan were reduced by more than 15% when the film was in its third week.

2. Box Office India Trade Magazine: These guys have plenty of sources and usually fetch figures directly from the distributors. They also provide circuit-wise figures on a daily basis. Their figures from a few circuits are at times way off the mark. Also, in recent times they have started quoting trade figures for a few films and producer figures for others. In short, their figures are not consistently accurate and bias towards a certain top star is pretty evident.

3. Figures from the production house: Exhibitors (theatre owners) report to distributors, who report directly to the producers. So only the producers accurately know how much a film has collected. But in today’s times its all about opening day / weekend records and films that are fastest to 100 / 200 crore clubs get nation-wide free publicity across all news channels and social media websites. That results in higher ticket sales, because a film that is record-breaking is considered to be good content-wise too.

For example, industry insiders are well-aware of the fact that Chennai Express did not break the opening day record of Ek Tha Tiger. But, UTV released a figure that was a mere Rs 0.12 crore higher than the previous record held by Salman Khan’s 2012 blockbuster. Result? ‘Shahrukh Khan beats Salman Khan at the box office’ was breaking news. It also became the fastest to the 100 crore club by collecting 100.45 crore in 3 days, another big record, more publicity. The film went on a historic run and eventually became the highest grosser of all time. While Chennai Express was a well-made film and thoroughly entertained every section of the audience, the fact that it broke the opening record helped it break more records in the long run.

When years of hard work and crores of rupees go into the making of every film, we can’t really blame the makers for not being 100% honest, can we? But the big problem is, this game of manipulating figures could get dirtier. The difference between various trade sources will get bigger with every major release. Those who love discussing figures, may no longer be thrilled by a record-breaking opening from their favourite superstar. In short, it could get way too predictable. Every commercial holiday release featuring Salman, SRK, Aamir and Hrithik, that is even close to the previous record, will be pushed over the line to break records .

At the same time, BoxofficeIndia could also be playing a smart game here. In recent times, every media channel has started quoting figures released from production houses and leading trade analysts. Since every fan would want their favourite star’s film to break records, BOI figures were no longer being quoted or trusted. But now, the difference between their figures and producers is so huge that a section of the media has already started quoting figures from BOI. Could well be a publicity stunt from them too!

Indicine too has grown tremendously over the last few years, we now have our own set of reliable sources. We publish our own figures for small / medium releases, but currently we do not have enough sources in the trade to track wide releases like Krrish 3, Chennai Express or Ek Tha Tiger. To give you an example, Yash Raj Films produce and distribute their films themselves. How can any one even know where they release their films? How can BOI or any other website, get collections from a fixed rental screen in a small town in Uttar Pradesh? It’s impossible, no matter how many sources you have in the trade! That doesn’t mean their figures are unreliable, it’s just inaccurate!

Coming back to the controversy around Krrish 3. We have spoken to a lot of exhibitors and distributors in the last few days, we also have theatre-wise figures from a few centres for the first week. According to our estimates, the Hindi version of the film has collected around Rs 138 crore in its first week and 170 crore net in the first 10 days. The Telugu and Tamil version has contributed around 12-13 crore, taking the lifetime collections of the film to around 182-183 crore. Again, these figures are not 100% accurate, just estimates.

Any source, any figure you take.. Krrish 3 is still one the biggest blockbusters of the year. It’s a hugely profitable film for all its investors.

Finally, a word of advice. Take your pick and trust the source that you think is most reliable. But stick to ONE source, don’t change it according to your convenience or liking towards your favourite star!

  • Hello @INDICINE,
KRRISH3 first Monday collection BOI said it was 31.5cr but all world believe including BOI that monday average occupacy 90%+, near 4000 screen in hindi release(as because monday some screen added) and 90%+ average occupacy definately touch 35cr, how its became 31.5cr,
    please INDICINE tell me.

  • U cant jst implicate one side and give full credibility to other when u have no basis to determine which is right…..

although i wonder how cme boi gave krrish 3 blockbuster status with in first week with a reported collection of only 123 cr…when the budget of movie is 115 cr…

dosnt sound logical unless there’s smthing that they r not telling

  • @indicine( Dont think they did anything wrong, it’s their film after all. Who are we to even question them?)
if any film producer thinks this way will end up with the highest figures surpassing hollywood movies lol
ppl saying that 4000 theaters cant be tracked down
why is only then for k3 impossible and not for ce which has quite same number of theaters??????????
we question the big difference 53 cr we dont question theater number!
    also
it s a lame excuse to ssume too much that boi cant account for small screens
hat about old movies before krrish
hy this hypocrisy and double standards which emanated only to legalise bubble fake records of k3
we are not against k3 or hr
    we love koi mil gaya
    more than you
we dont want stars to write history based on fake records
    bcz easy come easy go
and a big salute to integrete ppl who cherish arm bringing than deception

  • WHY suddenly is the public interested so much in the monetary collections are the makers going to share the profit with the aam junta….NO.

while the film maker was spending crores to make the film did he advertise i am spending so much to give you good film help me with the finances….NO

so leave the monetary figures to the business man who spend the money we as public should have only one intent go watch the film and be entertained.

  • this manipulation game was started by aamir khan with 3 idiots…for all the movies there is difference is collections of different trade analysts but 3 idiots is the only movie for which every single trade analyst gives same collection that is 202 crores…thats because it was given by producers and everyone accepted it,strange…actual collection of 3 idiots is between 180-190 crores………

  • So, to make the long story short, all these MANIPULATION was started by CE and srk.

No wonder it broke records and now karma has caught up with them.

They are left with their mouths wide open bcuz Krrish 3 gave them their own dose.

    Lol.

    Go Krrish Go !!!!

  • On a serious note.

Guys, why so much of fighting?

Producers of the movie are the ones that invest and just like any product that we see in the market you got to take the claims with a pinch of salt.

They will do anything to market their product to gain maximum profit.

Also, there are people who promote products – like stars, who are paid to say all the false things about a product – for eg., a beauty product – and we know that fairness cream laganey se koyi gora nahin banta. Similarly it is possible that trade junkies can increase the figures if they get a good amount in their kitty, as there is no regulation to check the correctness/accuarateness of any source.

So, all in all, as Indicine said, you can either be happy with what the producers say, or believe in a source that fits your requirement.

    To each his own.

Since we all are in Indicine, i prefer to stick to Indicine data. (and no, Indicine did not pay me a single penny for this last line. lol)

  • I would like to add here that figures of BOI.com are in nett, not in gross.
So,the collection of Krrish 3 still sums up to around 170-175 gross (hindi version).
    Now the difference minimises

  • It hr fan really believe k3 collection they wont do argument here.since they also have doubt in k3 figure so they try 2 convince other.

  • If hr fan really believe k3 collection they wont do argument here.since they also have doubt in k3 figure so they try 2 convince other.

  • WHATEVER YOU SAY FOR CE IN REAL IT IS FOR K3 SO SOMEWHERE INDICINE ALSO KNOWS REALITY
With figures from several centres across India pouring in, the opening day collections of Krrish 3 is likely to come as a huge disappointment for the trade and fans of Hrithik Roshan. As per early estimates, the Hindi version of the superhero film has collected around 16-17 crore on Day 1. Update: The Hindi version of Krrish 3 has collected around 23-24 crore, while the Tamil/Telugu version has collected 2 crore, taking the first day business to around 25-26 crore.
The big question tomorrow will be, why did a film like Krrish 3, one of the biggest releases of 2013, carrying huge hype and curiosity, under-perform on Day 1? Sources close to the Roshans say, Rakesh Roshan, who has been in the industry for over 4 decades now, wanted to release his film on November 4th i.e after all the Diwali festivities. He was advised and later convinced to release the film on November 1st i.e 3 days before Diwali. The result? Dhanteras (first day of Diwali festivities) has had a major impact on business, as the film dropped by more than 30-40% late-noon onwards, even though the start in the morning was outstanding. The other option was to release Krrish 3 on Monday, which was a holiday, but the remaining days in the week were working weekdays. Unfortunately, since Diwali coincided with Sunday, they had to take a gamble which they did by releasing an extremely risky film like Krrish before Diwali.
Hrithik Roshan tweeted “Pre diwali non holiday gets 25.5cr for Krrish 3! Congrats to my team Krrish! Thank u INDIA! How do I give back this love to all of u? Gratitude!!!”

  • manipulating efforts of boi has paid of realy wel in d case of poor akki. ouatimD 1st day collections given by production house & all othr major sites 14 cr in 1200 crs. boi =9 cr. others=2nd day=12 cr. boi=8 cr. film wasnt dat gud. bt they hav brutaly kild witout ny trace.
next was BOSS. @ first boi postd dat boss has colectd 18+ crs & it can go upto 20+ crs wen d final result coms & it has alredy brokn AK’s previous best RR’s 1st day record of 15+crs. bt 2nd day boi showd their real class by dumping boss by merly crediting it just 12crs as its 1st day earning. they did d same wit salman as they hav limitd ETT to a ridiculous 199. but in akkis case blame it on him only. he has got a very huge fan base but spoils it by doing 4 or 5 films in a random basis witout going for 1 quality film lik d other super stars.

  • @to everyone supporting producers figures…in Dec D3 will break each and every record of K3 even with holidays or without holidays ..according to producers figures…and again in jan 2014 salman’s “jai ho” will again break all records of D3 and happy new year will follow the same..and from now onwards we will believe what is published by producers..ok …so i think its end of all discussion..enjoy K3 success for 1 month next month it will be broken..so enjoy ur fullest…even if D3 get’s 1 star by critic ..still..and i mean it …the first day will be 50-60 cr..(christmas is not a holiday for offices and private companies)..the last thing which i woud expect from all K3 producers collection believer’s..Don’t post any artical saying D3,jai ho,HNY or any movie collections r fake or doesn’t match BOI..becoz..from K3 the trend has started and will follow the suit …i don’t need to agree or disagree with anything now..will follow wikipedia…and don’t even be surprised if “shingh sahab the great” shows 30 cr+ opening and 200 cr lifetime..please except everything..good luck

  • great observation vipin. boi has undoutebly supported srk & is trying to degrade the liks of salman, akshay, hrithik etc. Ett s 199 crore will b always remain as a living monument of their dirty politics. in case of akshay its really went worse. ouatim and boss were literally killed by boi. but as u said blame it on kumar only. sad to watch wasting such a humongous fan base & genuibe talent.he shud restrict himself into only 1 or 2 movie/ year.

  • @seema k,

if you don’t give the collections, the sites will try to get an average figure and paste it, comparing it with earlier collections from your area.

So, in short, there are no trusted sites on collections in India to give true figures.

  • Further, as data is SOLD big time nowadays, i guess every theatre owner would sell the collections data to a willing purchaser, even if the producers tells the distributors to stop giving the data

However, as rightly pointed out by Indicine, it is difficult to get data from far off interiors where things are noted manually, but it should come up in a few days.

Hence, whatever figures quoted by sites could be accurate by say 70% and the rest is just a calculated approx figure that is averaged as per earlier data.

And with the fast moving and fast forgetting world that we live in now, no one cares what the real figures are later, as things have already moved on, and we are already counting what the figures are for next movie.

Also, as observed here, most importantly, none of the sites are consistent in giving data, hence, it doesn’t make any sense to believe any one currently.

  • @hr, dude the verdict given by the BOI is totally different from other sites… the budget is not an important criteria for verdict according to them… they declared it bb because they looked the trend on its 2nd friday which was 7.5 crs, which could easily take the 2nd week total to 45-50 crs… so adding these 45-50 crs in the first week of 122 crs, the two week total would be around 170 crs, which is definately a blockbuster business… so remember, they declared it blockbuster by looking its 2nd friday collection which was very good for a long run…. and only based on this criteria they declared raone also as hit….

  • @ghost you get me wrong. I clearly mentioned as Indicine himself stated no source is trustable. That’s y i said i will pick Boi for my info. And who told you that i am being try to neutral as every regular indicine visitor know i am big Aamir fan and salman fan.no one here is neutral who commenting here on collection section neither you nor me or anybody else because neutral person has nothing to do with these kind of controversial figures. And i think you haven’t read my comments which i done in previous k3 pages properly. You will get to know that i am not worship any site, even i am not worship my fav actors because if i have to worship than will do for my parents and God,allah aur bhagwan. And because you are Hr fan that’s why you supporting these figures when D3 makers manipulate their figure and show d3 surpassed k3 easily and some other site shown less collection than you also did the same as other actors fans doing because it human nature to see best for their favs and worst for others

  • @JC, lol r u kidding? manipulation started by SRK n CE???
then what about ETT whose producers collection was 16cr more than BOI’s collection…
this all started from Salman’s ETT… followed by other big movies…
but anyways CE has crossed 3I’s 202cr collection acc. to both BOI and Producers, but K3 will never cross 200cr acc. to BOI.
it will just finish at 185-195cr which producers will say around 240-260cr.
    but truth we all know..
K3 has actually broke only one record and that is the highest single day other records are still safe with ETT and CE..

  • @rohit respect for your thought but not agreed the site which you are bashing is the 2nd most trustable and visiting site worldwide. It started in 2003 and its collection is taken by Wikipedia and imdb you are right it just a site but it is believe on someone its not important that you meet all people expectation everytime some time you may be wrong but doesn’t mean you start to doubt. As srk, salman, aamir, hritik, abhishek, john and vivek just are actors but still we people loved Srk,salman, aamir and others and most hating abhishek, vivek and others flop actor only due to there quality and talent, similarly Boi provide trust among their visitor so its still is 2nd most trusting trade website all over India.

    “you asked it” section:

    Q. Why are makers over reporting collections so much now?

    A. Mainly so that it looks they beat previous records and set higher ones which are harder to beat but the next guy will just inflate a little more to set higher records. Its all for perception.

    Q. How much would have Krrish 3 collected if it had released on Monday after Diwali?
    A. It could have gone to 40 crore.

  • When ETT 186 became 198, its OK

When CE 208 became 227, its OK

but in the case KRRISH3, its not any KHAN’s film!

Its Khan fan made controversy! Bcoz they feel insecure against Roshan.

  • Hello friends,
Monday collection BOI said it was 31.5cr but all world believe including BOI that monday average occupacy 90%+, near 4000 screen hindi (because monday some screen added) 90%+ average occupacy definately cross 35cr, how its became 31.5cr, please anyone tell me so how BOI became india’s most trusted.

  • Thank you Indicine for such a wonderful article. I hope this will clear everyone’s doubts. I had previously posted in the last few articles that producers inflate while Box Office India under-reports collections. I had suggested that perhaps the average of the 2 sources could give the accurate collections; and estimated Krrish 3 collections to be around 185 crores. Indicine says 182-183 crores, so that is not much off the mark. And this also shows Box Office India Trade magazine has given the most accurate figures so perhaps we could turn to them for collections now. I hope nobody will now blindly trust the producers or BOI (as Indicine points out with the example of Jodha Akbar and OSO, in a few years they may reduce Chennai Express collections and say it didn’t touch even 200 crores and that 3 idiots is still the highest grosser).

  • one thing for sure if bollywood hungama can track 4100 screen then why they can’t provide fig for only 400 screen for dubbed version?
And indicine if opening day or weekend record effect so much then why ETT or any movie cant break 3I record as CE did on each website?
This article only shows how you trying to degrade CE and SRK and not pointing any single word towards K3 as you say for EVENTUALL BECAME BLOCKBUSTER AND FACT THE OPENING RECORDS HELPS TO BREAK MORE RECORDS
And most important thing you have to change your criteria for dubbed version inclusion in hindi collectione wow as one side called adda today change criteria for give not status of atbb…
If boi can track CE for 3700 then why not for 4100 of K3?
K3 first day is working day so 18 cr acc to boi may not wrong as CE 4th day is 11+ some where as BOI says 31+ for K3 fourth day?
I m not defending BOI or degrade K3 as admn did for CE but you cant ignore the different 50 crore any for BH easy to give dub fig but why they can not is hard to understand to clear each record as this problem come bcoz of BH bcoz only hindi collection must to count for any comparition with 3I,ETT,YJHD,CE like biggies???
One thing for 3I,CE,ETT you can roar out loudly but for K3 ???

  • @jazz..sing shahab the great collect 30 cr 1st day!!!u must be out of mind….producer may give manipulated number….bt the number not much den 20-30cr lifetym….do u think that after such a big buzz, great booking krish 3 open with only 15cr in hindi…its riddiculas…..nd dhoom 3 can touch 50-60 cr in holiday….the buzz of dhoom 3 is really high….any one can feel that….even krish 3 touch 36 cr in 4th day……32 cr acc to boi
