Chennai Express Review: Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone

After months of anticipation and release date hassles and an extended promotion campaign which can only be termed as a promotion blitzkrieg, Chennai Express finally chugs into theatres today. The expectations from the film are evidently huge because Chennai Express marks the coming together of one of the country’s biggest Superstars with one of the biggest directors in the form of Rohit Shetty. Other factors are also with it.
The Eid release, Deepika Padukone as the lead actress and the masala commercial genre. For obvious purposes, this film is not aiming to be critically acclaimed. And, the critic reviews aren’t even going to matter when it comes to its Box office returns.

Chennai ExpressChennai Expres Movie Review: Starring Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone

Story: Chennai Express is about a 40 year old guy named Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) who has been under the care of his grandparents. He has to go from Mumbai to Rameshwaram to immerse his dead grandfather’s ashes. And the train journey brings a great twist in his life. He witnesses a murder on the aptly titled, Chennai Express and has to travel with the goons to their village. Also accompanying them is the daughter of the local don, Meenamma (Deepika Padukone). Then the story finally moves forward in the train, then in the village. All of this was evident from the trailer itself, and I am not going to spoil the movie for you by giving away the storyline.

Screenplay and Direction: Chennai Express is not unlike any of Rohit Shetty’s previous films. But it is not a Golmaal 3 (full comedy) or Singham (full action masala) either. Chennai Express has elements of all the genres that make up a masala entertainer in Hindi cinema – it has shades of romance, action, drama, but the overlying emotion is comedy. The jokes don’t always come together and the gags border on lameness, but don’t tell me you went to watch a Rohit Shetty film expecting it to make sense! Unlike Ramaiya Vastavaiya which was a total wreck even in the masala romance genre, Chennai Express does manage to save face with Rohit Shetty’s past experience of superhit films coming to rescue the film. The film is mostly always enjoyable and illicits quite a few laughs when it is self-aware about the type of film they are attempting. And no, I don’t think anyone in South India should be offended by anything in the film because the jokes come across as harmless, even though a bit forced.

Miscellaneous: The other aspects of the film are appropriate for the masala genre. The cinematography does justice to the planning of the shots, but the production design is patchy. It lacks the component of class unlike Shah Rukh Khan’s past few films. The editing is there. The editor seemed to bring the film down to a respectable 140 minutes, so that’s a job well done, I am assuming. The costume designs are a bit stereotypical and loud as expected from masala films like Chennai Express.

Music: Although the music has been termed as average ever since the album was released in the public domain, the late inclusion of Lungi Dance has made things better for the album. Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari is colourful and joyous and is a treat to watch on the big screen. 1234, Titli, Tera Rastaa Na Chhodoon Na might not stay with you after the film but they are enjoyable in their own right. All in all, the soundtrack is not a disappointment but it is also not a classic commercial movie soundtrack.

Acting: Chennai Express requires Shah Rukh Khan just to play himself or even ham it up when required. And that is exactly what he has done. He has hammed it a bit, but that’s what this film needed. His comic timing is also very good. He seems to have had a lot of fun playing Rahul. But the person who will be talked about the most after Chennai Express is Deepika Padukone. Her accent is a total laugh riot and so is she! She thankfully doesn’t overdo the accent as was being feared by many. Her dialogues and accent could become iconic if the film becomes a big hit. Nikitin Dheer is menacing as Tangaballi and is fine in this film although his acting skills are questionable. Sathyaraj , the famous Tamil actor, plays Deepika’s father in the film and is good enough for his first outing in Hindi cinema. Mukesh Tiwari is funny as the cop.

Conclusion: The film works because the dull moments are few and far between. The South Indian flavour might put off a few but nobody would be offended. The first half of the film is genuinely funny and the second half lags behind a bit. But the climax is great. That increases the box office chances of the film by a great deal. Forget the film reviews by us snobby critics and go watch Chennai Express and usher in the Eid festivities. This train is anything but a train-wreck.

Box Office: The opening of the film is going to be record-breaking and will help the film create news. I expect the film to be liked by the family and mass audiences. Not that the ‘classes’ will hate it. 150cr is a target that shouldn’t be beyond the reach of Chennai Express.

Positives:

  • The brisk pace of the film
  • The entertainment quotient and funny set-pieces
  • The action scenes are typical Rohit Shetty ishtyle
  • Lungi Dance and Kashmir Kanyakumari song
  • SRK and Deepika Padukone

Negatives:

  • Production Design
  • Over the top and forced jokes

Rating: ★★★½☆ 3 and a half stars.

  • Its a crap movie.. Second movie in my life after KANK which forced me and my friends to walk out the theatre just 20 minutes into the second half… Unfortunately both movies have the same actor Shahrukh Khan…

@Indicine, After reading this review, one thing is for sure that the writer of this review is a die hard fan of SRK.. Because for every negative aspect of the film you have come up with a line supporting as this is a masala genre…
    .
I think now SRK will announce his retirement when he gets the final final report card of Chennai Express as a BIGGEST DISASTER OF THE CENTURY AND IN THE HISTORY OF BOLLYWOOD..

  • @Joker

    Swades was a FLOP.

Chak De wasnt exactly a Blockbuster either!

& people complain why SRK dont have sallu like 150+ crores ATBBs.

When he does Chak De, Devdas, MNIK, nobody really appreciates & makes it a 150+crores ATBB.

  • The movie is awesome!!!! King khan amazing comedy….truly the DDLJ background music touched me a lot…king khan has never changed since DDLJ….loved it..Going tomorrow again…especially for the comedy!!!!. I am confident now that this movie will cross 200 crores easily in India…really 100% sure because it is pure entertainment…SRK…you proved that you can do any kind of movies and these type of movies are just a cake walk for you!!!. good songs…. I am just repeating once again….its SRK’s comedy will attract the audience to the theater again n again!!! I challenge you that even on 15th aug, this movie will be in most of the screens and if once upon a time in mumbai dobaara will be doomed.

    1st week 135cr to 150cr

    Lifetime 202cr plus

  • Forget the film reviews by us snobby critics and go watch Chennai Express and usher in the Eid festivities.

what do you mean by this line indicine ?? why so partial towards srk movie ?? why you opting people to see the movie anyhow ?? in your review , you are clearly being soft cornered to chennai express, why don’t you do the same while reviewing other movies ??? if this is the case, then no matter how bad movie srk makes, you will never give it appropriate review ! ce is plain non sense movie which offends south indians. i hope you also say people to show patriotism and watch once upon a time in mumbaai dobara. if you don’t say this , then i will be concluded that this site only favors shahrukh.

  • @romance express, bete din dahade sapne mat dekh, ce can’t ever touch 200 cr, ouatimd will thrash it away like dry leaves.

  • @qamar, exactly ! indicine was covering up the negative points of the film with supporting lines which is totally biased and partiality !

  • hahaha most reviewers are giving it 2 and a half stars rating and here we have indicine giving it an undeserving 3 and a half stars. if you don’t believe me, then see rediff, indian express, santabanta etc.

  • @r20 ce wom is excellent, now plz prey ouatimd wom will also comes good, othewise it will become another joker2.

  • It will open huge and perhaps manage an 80 cr weekend and 100crs in 6 days. It won’t sustain a lot in the long run as oatimd will defintely have better content. Lifetime will be 130-135 crs. It might save srk’s stardom to some degree

  • Movie is just awesome… just returned after watching … do hell with critics who cares… full on entertaining movie..

  • Chennai Express is an above average film… Nothing extraordinary… Expected much better than this… 1st half is good… It has some genuine laughs… 2nd prt drags a bit.. But the climax makes up… Those who relish typical masala potboilers will love it… although it will be a huge hit… But the question is its time he stops playing romantic roles and focus on scripts which are great and entertaining too… He is too good an actor to do these run of the mill movies… Hope he does a Chak de or Swades type movies soon..

  • Nothing personal here, but guys you need to read the reviews at Glamsham and Firstpost. The most hilarious of all.

  • We are curious to see this film, but songs of this movie that we heard so far are horrible / bad.
We seriously apprehend that this film will be good and comedy should be upto mark. Lets hope we should not be cheated by this film, mainly due to bad songs with no melody and awful / borrowed lyrics.
We also hope that mere box office figures be it sky high should be misleading so far as contents and music of this movie is concerned.

  • shahrukh khan rahul is amazing in chennai express. wonder why he waited so long to do a comedy ? C.E is funnnnnn deepika makes the movie even more fun , her accent is soo cute and she looks really sizzling in chennai express. chennai express quotes are soo great :D can see a second time for sureee . still in chennai express mode :D

  • Chennai express is awesome. Fun express it is. deepika’s accent in it is so amazing. she is cute and fun in it. you just love hearing her talk in chennai express. shahrukh khan comic timing was too good

  • the Chennai EXPRESS is here. shahrukh khan and deepika should really do more comedy movies like this family fun it was for sure. will watch it with friends now :D songs are awesome . fan of rohit shettyyy

  • fan of priyamani .went for her and i think i am a fan of deepika padukone now . chennai express is amazing. entertainment for suree

  • I didn’t want to see Shahrukh in any film for this director coz I know that he makes silly comedy films like Golmaal Series – stupid films.. but went to see it and hoped that with Shahrukh as a hero.. it will be something different for sure.. well.. it’s a pastime film, but with funny scenes.. one funny scene worth to be watched.. where Deepika is sleeping with Shahrukh in a bedroom and wakes up mid night kicks Shahrukh, with her funny face which scares u and make u laugh in the same time.. was hilarious! that was the best scene in this film.. If I would compare this film with OSO, the last was better because it had a story.. this film has no content.. but it will be a super hit at the box office for sure as it’s a film for the most who enjoy shallow and silly comedy.

I loved his old comedy films more than this one.

  • Chennai Express (2013) Direction: Rohit Shetty

    Genre: Comedy Action

Shahrukh Khan’s current film prima facie has semblance to an old 1980s movietoons & with due respect it has practically nothing new to offer. Highly predictable lines much to our dismay: Fellows, you may see this mediocre movie with your brain dumped outside otherwise don’t criticize this stereo typed / formula movie.

Rohit Shetty film Chennai Express can easily be identified as being routine and being borrowed from stuff, worn out concepts (but successful ones) from past and period formulas, but most of the fellows will be delighted to see such a mixbag-routine (masala) containing abundant forced comedy to a overblown action but again the masses will also like it and that is reason of an extraordinary return at the box-office.

We, with a heavy heart say that Shahrukh Khan should not retire now but he must pick a good script for the film to be made, Fellows & critics; do kindly remember, films are not just made for an average brain holders, but, it is made with a sizable budget to cater all segments of people who prefer to see a good quality film with substance and some professionalism and that they come to a theater to watch innovation, of makers but here we are sorry to put forward there is none.

Surprisingly, local industry tricks play a pivotal role in collection of a large box-office turnover particularly for a movie which is just so mediocre.

Department of songs is the worst of this film. Poor music orchestra: and unimpressive lyrics and ho-hum style songs that we had witnessed in hundreds of films of the bye gone era. Shahrukh Khan is a versatile / very senior actor he should not only sign well written projects & he must also focus on the music of the film which should be good like his past films of 1990s in particular.

The question: why do get so upset in Shahrukh Khan’s film this is because he is brilliant & we admire him being his fans and generally have high expectations as compared to other actors of Bollywood.

The pace of movie is quick only to the extent for first hour or so, later it is a rather pain to sit in the theater. AT a certain portion: Why songs are cued one after another, placement is seriously flawed, you cannot deny this, even a nut head would endorse this. Moreover, the music repelled must of us as being bad, even the background audio supporting the main songs is also average.

Comedy is of the type that is called “FORCED ENTERED” so you may laugh or you may wonder why it was uttered. Shahrukh Khan is capable to perform light comedy, but slap stick comedy or pure comedy of a film is not his game, at least for now.

The only thing that holds the wafer thin plot is the anecdote between the lead stars.

Deepika Padukone is emerging is a popular star performing much better than Khan sb in this film. We must admit the facts. We must accept what is good, Without Deepika Padukone’s support Khan would have been in thick soup.

Friends, There is a pretty routine CG action and some rapturous bang bangs and but we liked it as it an essential spot for a typical masala movie like this one.

On whole, it an OK movie, but for fans of Shahrukh (Khan sb) we are not so happy with Chennai Express. *** B -.

  • reading people reviews about this film after 21 days its make me feel to say that it shuts many mouth that an average film of SRK can do a BLOCK BUSTER Business
