Filmmaker Maneesh Sharma came to Mumbai with a dream of directing Shah Rukh Khan and he finally realises it with next week’s release FAN. Directing a film starring SRK in the lead has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The advantage is, Shah Rukh’s presence guarantees a good opening at the box office, but on the other side, his films also come with immensely high expectations. The burden of directing a Shah Rukh film, which is watched by millions of people worldwide, is huge. When expectations are high, the chances of disappointing the audience is higher and Sharma knows it.
He had earlier said “I was an assistant on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and today I’m getting to direct Shah Rukh Khan. It’s a dream come true. I’m a big fan of his powerhouse talent. Fan comes with a lot of responsibility. I have followed SRK’s life since his Fauji days. There’s no way I can let him down”
From a box office point of view, Sharma’s films in the recent past haven’t really performed well. His debut film ‘Band Baaja Baarat’ did well, ‘Ladies vs Ricky Behl’ tanked, while ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ just about recovered its investment because of its opening. His highest grosser to date is ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’ which collected Rs 47 crore at the box office.
Almost all films have only appealed to a tiny section of the audience. That would have to change with a film starring Shah Rukh in the lead.
With FAN, the onus is on the director to deliver a good film because in today’s times when the word-of-mouth is spreading quicker than ever, only films that are liked by the audience are performing well at the box office. The multiplex audience isn’t even willing to give bad films a chance, because the ticket prices are too high for the middle-class to afford – especially at big cities.
For Shah Rukh, the success of FAN will be important. His last release ‘Dilwale’ did well at the worldwide box office, but the general perception is that the Rohit Shetty film did not perform.
The box office outcome of FAN will also have a direct impact on the much-hyped Eid clash between ‘Raees’ vs ‘Sultan’. If FAN fails, ‘Sultan’ will have a massive advantage this Eid. If FAN does very well, the battle will be more even.
Box office and everything else aside, when it comes to a film like ‘FAN’, the expectations from Shah Rukh Khan fans is huge. Will Maneesh Sharma deliver?
FAN releases in theatres on April 15. Advance booking opens across all theatres on Sunday.
SRK is not just the wish of Maneesh Sharma but many many other directors including some one like Rajkumar Hirani who pursued him for both Munnabhai and 3 Idiots.
Am thankful to Maneesh Sharma for his attempting to make this movie and the character of Gaurav. Plus a movie without songs is another first one for SRK and looking forward for the different experience.
Waiting to meet Gaurav desperately. How big it will be on box office? Difficult to tell before watching. But box office is something I m least concerned as far as this movie is concerned. It is only and only about meeting Gaurav Chandana.
Gaurav has already won so many hearts. Cant remember any character whose name has already been so much talked about even before the release of movie. Hoping this will be best ever SRK performance.
2 SRKs in one movie and both clashing with each other. Plus the return of SRK of Darr and Bazigar. What more can a SRK fan ask for?
This movie for me is only about my “Connection with SRK” infact my “Connection with Gaurav”.
The most awaited movie of the year for me.

Anyways i agree maneesh films didn’t hv to cater to big section of audience to bcm hits bt with time both his hits sdr & bbb managed to reach out to lot of ppl thanx to popularity on tv as well as internet. Fan will definitely do well. I hv faith in Maneesh

He has to deliver..there is no other choice.. The theatrical trailer has made me so curious that I am desperately waiting to watch FAN..I just hope it gets big enough release so that it has chances of collecting 25-30 crore in a single day..Also,this is indeed a real test of Shahrukh Khan’s star power as far as this decade is concerned..it is his first non holiday release and also holiday’s like RAM Navmi have never been big for Bollywood.. Whatever it collects on day one will most probably be due to his presence because we are seeing that the film does not have many advantages as far as opening is concerned.. Let’s hope for the best.. Time and again SRK has delivered and silenced the naysayers, I expect him to do so for One More Time..
Sreemoyee Piu Kundu, author of ‘Faraway Music’, ‘Sita’s Curse’ & ‘You’ve Got The Wrong Girl’, says Salman is a miserable drunk, animal hunting, woman beating, drugged out, law-abusing son of a rich father who himself cheated on his wife!
On Friday, ever since the verdict of Salman’s bail is out, social media (we’re talking about the non-fans of Sallu) has been lashing out at the Indian Judiciary, public prosecution, Mumbai police for denying justice to the victim of the 2002-hit-and-run-case. Amongst those venting on social media is Delhi-based author Sreemoyee Piu Kundu (originally from Calcutta), who unapologetically wrote an open letter of sorts on her FB page.
Here’s what she wrote:
“Just when you are impressed with justice in this country. You are bound to be disappointed. Shame on you, Salman Khan. For all your Being Human bhaigiri and your adopted sister, you are just a miserable drunk, animal hunting, woman beating, drugged out, intellectually depraved, law abusing son of a rich and famous father who cheated on his wife and now lives with his wife, and mistress. Lacking the basic moral courage to call his spoilt son a criminal.
A bunch of failed siblings all living off Salman’s reflected glory. And for the stars, socialites and fans supporting this giant asshole who should get nothing less than his full term of ten years in jail, if not more, you deserve this shithole of a nation – scams, crooks and corruption at every level.
Shame on you Harsh Salve. Selling your soul time and again, to callous celebs who wield political power and huge monetary influence, instead of using your fancy legal degree to help those in need – yes, I mean men and women and children living on the streets. For defending another crook who for the last 12 years has bastardised the system, being arrogant enough to miss most of his hearings, trying to use false witnesses and involve his poor driver Ashok Singh, buying out his loyalty.
Shame on you prosecution and Mumbai police – for not dragging back singer Kamal Khan, another giant loser with an accent, who was sitting behind Khan when he drove over the innocent pavement dwellers. How is he even allowed to leave this country when he’s a key material witness?
Shame on you Bollywood producers and directors, lining up outside the Khan residence as if there is a condolence meeting in session, ass-licking an aging star who will help you get rid of your ill begotten wealth and substandard scripts – catering to a bunch of losers who watch this trash, year, after year, after year. Eaing you another 100 crores of black money borrowed from Dawood, or some other Bhai, based in Dubai, in all probability.
Shame India. These are your Heroes.
This is your judiciary.
This is your real face.
And do yourselves a favor, screw the charity theory. The he’s got a heart of gold. The million examples of how Salman Khan helps people in need. It doesn’t count when you drive drunk. Shoot a black buck. Bash up and abuse the women you love. And bribe your way to freedom after killing a man. Feeling sorry doesn’t justify what you did, or make your guilt any less.
