The last highest grosser of the year (HGOTY) that did not feature Salman Khan or Aamir Khan in the lead, was Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ back in 2007.
In other words, for the last 8 consecutive years, Aamir or Salman have topped four years each – Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)!
With Sultan all set to touch the 300 crore mark, 2016 is likely to be yet another year when the battle will be between the Top 2 superstars for the ‘Highest Grosser of the Year’.
The other big releases of the year have practically no chance – because of clashes or unfavourable release periods – to get anywhere close to the total of ‘Sultan’.
While there is very little to differentiate between Salman and Aamir, there is one interesting point that shows Aamir has held the upper hand in the last few years.
Since 2008, each time Aamir had a release ready for Christmas, he has achieved the following:
- All his films have become the highest grosser of the year
- All his films have gone on to become the highest grosser of all time (a record that has eluded Salman for the last many years, inspite of his super stardom)
- All Aamir films have also crossed a major milestone - Ghajini was the first film to 100 crore, 3 Idiots first to 200, Dhoom 3 was the first to 250 and PK in 2014 became the first to go past 300.
With plenty of open weeks and the best release period of the year – the odds will be in Aamir’s favour once again. However, he doesn’t have a top director like Rajkumar Hirani or a major franchise like Dhoom this time around – much like Ghajini in 2008.
If Dangal tops, the gap between Aamir (6 career HGOTY) and Salman (9 career HGOTY) will reduce to 2. Otherwise, Salman will earn the 10th highest grosser of his career and the gap between him and the rest will be 4 films or more.

Almost every Aamir film on Christmas has broken records, except offbeat TZP which clashed with commercial masala Welcome. And still TZP was superhit inspite of clash wih the more commercial film.

Here are the reasons:-
1.Movie will be bycotted by some people.
2.Genre is similar to Sultan.
3.No Hirani/Dhoom brand.
4.It is less commercial than Sultan.
I think lifetime will be 240-250 crs at max

Ghajini had debut director, debut actress, no brand, and still became the Highest grosser of all time in 2008. Because it struck a cord with the audience.
If Dangal strikes such a cord, then it will surely b the highest grosser of the year, if not All Time.
Dangal has a big chance too cross Sultan if Befikre doesn’t hold strong until Dangal comes out. Befikre comes out on 9 december while Dangal on 23. So if Befikre have very positive word of mouth i doubt it can cross sultan. But if it doesn’t then yes it will definitely have a big chance, but won’t cross PK. I highly doubt the director is as good as Raju and the script can’t be that amazing. On Christmas any film can be a hit just look at carwale. It became a hit. ATBB is another thing.
Dangal may not cross 400 crore, but has every chance to cross 300 crore.
Xmas + plenty of holidays + school & college remains closed + new year celebration + open weeks + Hirani = 100% success

The very fact that you wud like to count a taare… as an aamir film, a deewaana as a sharukh film, a roti kapda aur makaan as an amitabh film but not kkhh as salman’s film shows how baised you are against him.

Aamir is the ace of bollywood. Even SRK decided to clash with Kaabil on Republic day instead of clashing with Dangal on Christmas, which is a more lucrative period.

Of course Aamir will beat himself. Not anyone else. Aamir’s competition is he himself. So I am betting on dangal to beat pk by at least 20 cr-30 cr. Aamir’s unparalleled Megastardom + strong content will ensure that dangal will break into 350 cr club. Note. I am not against salman but some of his fans force me to bash him. The only actor I hate is srk. That’s all.
Dangal will make 175cr max.
This will be the 9th consecutive year in which either Salman or Aamir will have the HGOTY which is pretty much amazing.
In Dangal, Aamir is coming without Hirani and without any top heroine which makes it tough for Dangal to cross Sultan. Plus ppl have already watched and enjoyed a wrestling based movie “Sultan” this year so the novelty factor for Dangal also appears to be going against it.
But I will still put my money on Dangal to become the HGOTY. Reason? Aamir has been literally unstoppable (since 2008) whenever he has arrived on Christmas. Indicine has summarised Aamir’s achievements on Christmas weekends in a nice manner so I will just quote them here:

The above mentioned achievements are simply incredible. So I would not be betting against history here and my vote will be for Dangal.
But more than the HGOTY factor, I am waiting for Dangal mainly because I am expecting it to be another classical movie and performance of Aamir.
Dangal will be the highest grosser of the year followed by sultan.
