Bullett Raja Review

Tigmanshu Dhulia made a mark in the small Indie dominate genre of action-thriller-dramas with films like Paan Singh Tomar, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and its sequel. So when he manages to rope in a somewhat reputed star like Saif Ali Khan, you expect Dhulia to continue his golden streak. Also, it is clear that Saif Ali Khan by collaborating with Dhulia is looking for an image makeover. So does the planned tie-up go as well as it was expected to? Let’s dissect.

Story: The story in the first half of Bullett Raja is centered around two friends tied at the hip – Raja Mishra (Saif Ali Khan) and Rudra. Their friendship and bond goes back a long way and they engage in unlawful and (sometimes) lawful activities together. An influential politician (Raj Babbar) catches hold of them to use them as, basically, his henchmen. The story takes a twist when Rudra is eliminated by a rival gang and Raja goes in search of revenge. And as is the norm with Dhulia’s films, twist after twist is thrown at us to increase the drama. Amidst all this, Raja falls in love with a Bengali girl Mitali (Sonakshi Sinha) and manages to find time dancing around in the streets of Kolkata.

Bullett Raja Movie Review

Screenplay and Direction: Dhulia, as is often the case with recognized small time directors messing it up when given bigger budgets to work with, doesn’t know what to do with a bigger scale and a bigger budget than he is used to. The plot twists he employs in Bullett Raja doesn’t hold your attention for too long and by the end of it, they are a bit too predictable. What works though, are his kickass dialogues which increase the tension and the drama in the film.

The technical aspects of Bullett Raja is what catches the eye. The production design by Dhananjay Mondal is top class. Unlike Dhulia, Mondal has managed to do well with the increased budget. The action set-pieces are neatly choreographed and that’s where the problem occurs. These scenes should have had an air of spontaneity about them. The music is nothing to write home about. None of the songs except Tamanche Pe Disco, stay withyou. The background score lends a heavy note to the film and this is one part of the sound design that actually works.

Acting: Bullett Raja is supposed to be all about Saif Ali Khan. And not to discredit that claim, yes, the film is his story but dejectedly Saif doesn’t bring his roguish Langda Tyagi element to this film with confidence. He does carry a North Indian accent in the film but that goes on and off. It would be unfair to say he is overshadowed by Jimmy Shergill, but Jimmy gives him able company throughout his screen stay. Sonakshi Sinha plays the same character she has played in 90% of her films and it has become a drag to see her play the same role day in and day out. Vidyut Jamwal manages to liven up activities with his action and steals most of the scenes he appears in. Ravi Kishen is lamely cast but Raj Babbar does well.

Conclusion and Box Office: Bullett Raja could have been so much more. Owing to the name of the director attached with the film, it wouldn’t have been unfair on our part to have expected it to deliver all guns (and bullets of course) blazing. But Alas! Bullett Raja ends up as just another logicless action masala film with a hero who is looking to ape Chulbul Pandey. If you have a lot of free time in your hands, and lot of hair in your head to pluck out, please go watch Bullett Raja. Box Office wise, Bullett Raja is expected to open just about average at best. I will be hugely surprised if it creates any box office records. Very disappointing from a collaboration which sounded so very fresh when it was first announced.

Positives:

  • Jimmy and Vidyut’s acting
  • Action is high adrenaline
  • Production Design

Negatives:

  • Saif Ali Khan and Sonakshi Sinha’s acting and their pairing
  • Shoddy screenplay and lack of intense drama
  • Music
  • Dhulia’s lack of deftness in handling a big budget flick

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

  • @indicine you are biased you gave 3.5 stars for crap worst films like Chennai Express, Gori Tere Pyaar Meing and 4 star for Hollywood copy Krrish 3. Bullet Raja is a original and good film it deserves more than 3 stars.

  • If i were a director, then i wud have done some revolutionary movies like titanic, avatar or any superhero movies and made india feel proud

    • @Nipun, almost all Indian films are masala entertainers. Including films like Krrish 3, Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani etc. ‘Masala’ is nothing but a film with action, romance and comedy.

  • Bullett raja is an awesome movie. It’s a wholesome entertainer with some very good action scenes by vidyut jamwal. It’s the same director who gave you national award winning paan singh tomaar so you could imagine how wonderful the screenplay and story would be. In whole an amazing movie to watch.

  • see no comments!!! as soon as indicine gave bad reviews the comments dried up… just for a change im seeing 2 stars… dhulia obviously hasn’t done his public relations work right!!1

  • Masala Movies this year suffered big time due to crap named “Himmatwala”

Shootout at wadala :Was a good movie but collected below expectations due to Aashiqui 2 fever…
Ramaiya Vastavaiya:Was a below avg. movie, did well considering starcast
Chennai Express: Was a well made movie and the rest is history
Phata Poster Nikla Hero:Was an OK film, but eventually flopped, also was hit badly by Grand Masti
Besharam: Bad film, crashed at the box office after good opening
Boss: Good one time watch movie, but never really picked up and flopped

  • i watched it, its an excellent movie! how can you give such low ratings to this movie? It deserves more than 4. saif is getting better with every movie. he is a fantastic actor. Action and dialogues are outstanding.

  • @indicine:yes,i know.but i’m not saying about all masala movies.imo, when it comes to movies like agneepath, krrish 3,dhoom 2,don,they have some excellence and some style.but i don’t like movies like besharam, dabbang 2,ready etc.. whether it’s a masala movie or not, it should have a good script like agneepath, kaho na pyar hai, rab ne bana di jodi.

@sushant:because this nation and people always underrate hrithik. saif won national award for his simple role in hum tum. Aamir, Ajay and Big b get national awards when they do good movies. But hrithik was never given even after performances like guzaarish, koi mil gaya, jodha akbar.

  • Was a fan of indicine reviews, but last two reviews are really bad ones:
    GTPM:3.5 stars
    and now Bullet Raja:2 stars

  • @khan:you are saying about copy.right? ? ?what about bodyguard, ready, wanted.and unofficial copies like dabbang 2.you are a salman fan right? ?so stop saying about quality.atleast k3 deserves 4 rating.each and every well rated it

  • What did Salman say? he was right, people are going to kill this genre.

Most of the directors think that they can put any hero, make a rehash of Dabangg and get results like Salman did.

I am sorry, but people just don’t like it. People accepts very few and totally rejects the others.

In my view, looking at the trend, I can only say the following, that currently:-

Salman – any action or comedy crap, he can turn it in to 150 cr + on avg

SRK – any romantic crap, he can turn it to 150 cr + on avg

Aamir – content + massy, and he creates a new crore club, while anything less, he can still get close to 100 cr on avg

Hro – same as Aamir, but say around 130 to 150 cr on avg

Ranbir – unpredictable, as with a mute film he makes 100 cr, while a masala potboiler gets bunked

Akshay and Ajay, action + comedy + songs and they can touch 100 cr too, but not everytime.

Saif – needs Race 3 to prove anything or act in a muti-starrer to pull off a 100 cr +

Thus, Salman, SRK and Aamir are the safe bets currently as far as boxoffice returns are concerned.

  • as expected!!no comments. saif..please stick onto roles like hum tum and cocktail. action is not meant for you..please..we’ve geniuses here to pull it off better!!

  • bullet raja most reviews are on positive side but big problem will be its opening and if wom will not good than problem will also increased, i want this movie to be successful as i liked the trailer and if it fails than its definitely a red sign for R…Rajkumar because it shows if popular actor is not able to lift up movies this yer like Ranbir-Besharam and Akshay-Boss Ajay-Himmatwala etc than there wwill be very less chance remain for R..Rajkumar success and it will also get avg opening but if reviews come good than there is a chance for Shahid to come back. Agree with indicine that Sonakshi just making her career downward by doing same kinda Masala Movies again and again, she should do different kind of movies that will be beneficial for her not same kind of movies like this.

  • Agreed with @romance saif is no doubt a wonderful actor, he might be not a superstar but still makes his presence felt. @sushant saif got Padam Shri, hr not is this the only reason you dislike Saif? Bro there civilian award doesn’t having anything for stardom or collection and movie success, Aamir awarded padam shri in 26th jan,2003 after 14years of his career and Padam bhushan in 2010, srk got in 2005 after 13years since he starts career, salman hasn’t got yet due to criminal cases, akshay kumar got in 2009 after 17-18 year of career, Saif got in 2010 after 18year career, Ajay devgn is more deserving than hr moment this time but he hasn’t get that in his 21-22years career, hr has 13year spent in bollywood as an actor so how you can think he got this before saif, but i think probably in 2014or 2015 hr will be awarded with padam shri and he deserves that and might be srk would be awarded Padam bhushan in next 2year for his wonderful and glorious career.

Komal Nahta Tweeted: All u fans of Salman Khan, dil thhaam ke baitho aur suno. Trailer of JAI HO, in all likelihood, will be out with R… RAJKUMAR.

  • Saif is a great actor and bullett raja is an awesome movie with amazing actings by all the leads and villains in the movie.

  • @nipun i am not a salman fan atleast bodyguard wanted and ready are official remakes salman buy the rights of the film and remakes it.dabang 2 is a orginal film not a copy.but krissh 3 is shameless copy of xmen.batman.superman even shaktiman rakesh roshan is a biggest copycat he copies hollywood films without buying rights of the filmand he also gives fake boxoffice collection . krissh 3 is a worst film with overacting by hrithik he is most overrated actor ever even saif is much better actor than papas spoon feed kid hrithik.

  • @JC problm wid Akki is he is hitting the BoxOffice 3-4 times in a year if 1-2 times then he will sure give 120-130cr. but he needs script for that….Srk n Sallu dont need script for delivering hits
