Box Office Verdicts: First Half 2013

The first half of 2013 was good for Bollywood as business saw a jump of around 10% from the same period last year. 87 films released between January and June, with total collections of around 1,225 crores.

While the first half of 2012 had major grossers like Hrithik Roshan’s Agneepath, Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore, the biggest grossers of the first half of 2013 were Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Race 2 and Aashiqui 2.

YJHD was expected to cross the 100 crore mark, but the Ranbir Kapoor starrer went on to create history by collecting a mind-boggling Rs 187 crore net (by far the highest for a non-holiday release).

The biggest surprise of the year was Aashiqui 2. Produced by Vishesh Films and T-Series at a budget of around 16 crore including print and marketing, the Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor starrer collected Rs 83 crore at the domestic box-office.
