Box Office Collections – June 2013

  • Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 – Has opened well in North India. East Punjab and Delhi/UP circuit witnessed a good turnout for the morning and noon shows. Rest of India was slightly below the mark, as the film was a sequel to one of the most successful films of 2011. The super-success of last week’s release Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has also meant that the Deol starrer has been allotted fewer screens at multiplexes.

Box Office Collections – May 2013

  • May 3: Sanjay Gupta’s gangster film Shootout At Wadala opened well, and did reasonably good business in Maharashtra. Revenue from non-theatrical sources like Satellite and music rights, ensured that the producers didn’t lose money, in fact they made a decent profit. Theatrically, average grosser as a few distributors lost money. The other release this week was Bombay Talkies – made to celebrate 100 years of Indian Cinema.
  • May 10: Saif Ali Khan’s Go Goa Gone opened on limited screens (1150) and did well in select cities. Even though the film was made on a medium budget, recovery proved to be difficult. The word-of-mouth was good, but the film couldn’t sustain in it’s second weekend.
  • May 17: Yashraj Films’ Aurangzeb, second film of Arjun Kapoor, released on 1200 screens. The film couldn’t recreate the magic of Arjun’s first film Ishaqzaade. Average.
  • May 24: Preity Zinta’s comeback film Ishkq In Paris was the only major release this week. The film was a non-starter at the box office and one of the biggest disasters of 2013.
  • May 31: All eyes were on Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and the film more than lived upto it’s humongous expectations. The romcom collected Rs 19.5 crore on Friday, 20 crore on Saturday and 22.5 crore on Sunday – the growth in business over the weekend was phenomenal. With fantastic collections on Monday, the film will be the biggest grosser of 2013 by the end of Week 1. Massive hit.

Box Office Collections – April 2013

  • Apr 5: No star value, David Dhawan’s first outing after the ‘Rascals debacle’ – yet Chashme Baddoor opened well at the box office and collected 5 crores on it’s opening day. The reports are MUCH better than last week’s release Himmatwala.
  • Apr 12: Both Commando and Nautanki Saala opened slow, but picked up as the day progressed. Commando opened well at single-screens, while Ayushman Khurana’s Nautanki took a decent opening at multiplexes. Both films have been made on a low budget.
  • April 19: Solo-release this week – Ek Thi Daayan which didn’t open well at the box office. While the critics have the film a thumbs up, the film didn’t fare well at places where Emraan Hashmi films open well. To give credit where it’s due, the film wasn’t really a typical Bollywood horror film. The promos clearly didn’t have any mass appeal and the film was below-the-mark at plexes. Overall, the producers will recover their investment. AVERAGE.
  • April 26: One Hindi release (Aashiqui 2) and one major Hollywood film (Iron Man 3). The latter opened better, but Aashiqui 2 exceeded expectations on it’s opening day collecting 5.75 crore. The film then had a historic run at the box office, collecting 78 crore at the domestic box office. BLOCKBUSTER.

Box Office Collections – March 2013

  • Mar 1: The two major movies a week trend continues with the release of Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘The Attacks Of 26/11’ and John Abraham’s I Me Aur Main. Both open poorly and have little or no growth over the weekend. As expected, both movies ‘FLOP’ at the box office.

  • Mar 8: Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns and Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga released this week. While the former opened well the box office collecting a healthy Rs 3.25 crore net, the later was a non-starter. Bookmark this page for all Box Office updates.
  • Mar 15: Three releases this week – Jolly LLB, Mere Dad Ki Maruti and 3G. All three movies opened to a poor response on Friday morning. Jolly LLB though picked up and managed to put up good collections over the weekend. Mere Dad Ki Maruti too showed good growth in business. 3G was a disappointment, although it did decent business in smaller centres where sex and horror sells. Last week’s release Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns crashed in it’s second weekend. Kai Po Che steady at select cinemas. All eyes on Himmatwala now, which releases in theatres on March 29.
  • Mar 22: The trend of multiple releases continues. Aatma, Rangrez and Sona Spa released in theatres this weekend and all three opened to poor houses. Aatma was decent at mass-centres, Rangrez was poor, while Sona Spa is a washout. Last week’s release Jolly LLB was the first choice this weekend.
  • Mar 29: The last release of the month, the box office biggie Himmatwala, didn’t open to packed houses as expected. Released on 3100-3200 screens, the Sajid Khan film took a 40-50% All India opening. The response was extremely poor at Urban multiplexes, while screen screens at mass-dominated centres witnessed a decent turnout. Saturday, being a working day, is crucial for the Ajay Devgn starrer. Update: Crashed on Saturday, Sunday business was lower than Friday. Weekdays were poor too. FLOP. Biggest disappointment of the year so far.

Box Office Collections – February 2013

  • Feb 1: The first two releases of February – David and Vishwaroop – opened to a poor response. David was a box office disaster, while the Hindi version of Vishwaroop (backed by Balaji) did well at the ticket window.
  • Feb 8: This week also witnessed two new releases – Akshay Kumar’s Special 26 and Prabhu Deva’s ABCD – Anybody Can Dance. The trade was in for a surprise as ABCD opened to a better response than Special 26. As the day progressed, Special 26 came into it’s own collecting 5.75 crore on it’s opening day. For a film without stars, ABCD did well to collect 4.25 crore. The word-of-mouth for Special 26 was good which helped the film cross the 60 crore mark. ABCD is likely to end it’s run with 40 crores net.
  • Feb 15: Valentine’s day weekend saw two more hindi movies hit screens – Murder 3 and Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story. The former, without Emraan Hashmi, was riding on brand value. The later was a box office disaster from it’s opening day.
  • Feb 22:  It looks like every week has two new releases this year as the much-delayed Zila Ghaziabad and Rock On!! director’s Kai Po Che released in cinemas. Zila did well on single screens in mass-centres, while Kai Po Che rocked the big-city multiplexes. KPC, based on Chetan Bhagat’s ‘The 3 Mistakes Of My Life’ is carrying fantastic word-of-mouth. It’s like to collect 45 crore+ at the domestic box office. The film, released by UTV Motion Pictures, was a surprise hit at the overseas box office too. The film has fared very well in US, UK and Australia.

Week 4 Box Office Collections – January 2013

  • Jan 25: Race 2 opened to a good response. The film proved to be the biggest hit of Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone’s career. First major success of 2013.

Week 3 Box Office Collections – January 2013

  • Jan 18: Two releases this week – Inkaar and Mumbai Mirror, both opened to a poor response. Inkaar, with a bigger star cast, got a slightly better opening but the occupancy was less than 20% for noon shows. All eyes on Race 2 now!
  • Jan 18: Day 1 – Inkaar 1.5 crore (poor),  Mumbai Mirror 0.25 crore (disaster), Bandook 0.16 crore (washout).

Upcoming box office biggies: Race 2 (25th January), Special 26 (8th February), Murder 3 (15th February).

Week 2 Box Office Collections – January 2013

  • Jan 11: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: The makers spent a lot of money on marketing the film and released it on 1850 screens. But the box office opening on Friday was way below expectations. Thursday (Preview shows) + Friday – 6.5 crore.
  • Jan 12: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: Didn’t show enough growth, huge chunk of business was generated from premium multiplexes. Saturday: 6.65 crore.
  • Jan 13: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: Given the high costs, MKBKM looks almost certain to be Vishal Bhardwaj’s second failure in a row after Saat Khoon Maaf. The growth in business from Saturday was less than 10%. Sunday – 7.3 crore. First Weekend – 20.45 crore.
  • Jan 14: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: Managed to put up good numbers on Monday, as it was a holiday for ‘Makara Sankaranti’ in certain parts of the country.  Monday – 3.5 crore.
  • Jan 17: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola: The film collected Rs 2.3 cr on Tuesday, Rs 2.05 cr on Wednesday and Rs 1.9 cr on Thursday. Week 1 Total – 30.2 crore

Notes: The trade had huge expectations from MKBKM as Imran Khan was enjoying a good run, Anushka Sharma has a strong fan following of her own and Vishal Bhardwaj films are known for it’s quality. Matru also looked promising from the trailers, music was a decent success too, but the opening day and first week collections were lower than Imran’s last clean-hit Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Last week’s release Table No 21 crashed at the box office.

Week 1 Box Office Collections – January 2013

  • Jan 6: Table No 21: Friday – 1.5 cr, Saturday – 2 cr, Sunday – 2.25 cr. First weekend – 5.75 crore.
  • Jan 10: Table No 21: Monday – 1 cr, Tuesday – 0.95 cr, Wednesday – 0.9 cr, Thursday – 0.9 cr. First week total – Rs 9.5 crore.

Notes: Table No 21 made on a budget of Rs 9 crores, with no major stars (Paresh Rawal, Rajeev Khandewal, Tena Desae) was the first release of 2013. The film took a slow start on it’s opening day, but managed a healthy total in it’s first weekend and continued it’s steady run over the weekdays. With competition in Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, it remains to be seen if the film can sustain in theatres after it’s first week.

For major releases, this page will be updated everyday with domestic box office collections and links to articles on the website. For smaller films without major stars,  page will be updated once every 2-3 days.

how can you put randeep hooda and emraan hashmi’s films over akshay kumar’s films??

  • Krissh 3 may become the Ra One of 2013. Pathetic cast except Hrithik and Priyanka. All this sci-fi work won’t get it an audience.

  • @deepu:
Rakesh roshan is a much more talented and experienced director than anubhav sinha. Krrish 3 story and direction will be good.

  • d excitement fr krrish 3 n dhoom 3 is immense, cnt wait…..still remember 2006 , wen both krrish n dhoom 2 were huge blockbusters n top 2 grossers !

  • Best Commercial DIRECTOR of India Mr RAKESH ROSHAN will be back this year. He will ROAR!! Watch out for him Guys.

  • it looks like till now 2013 is disaster for bollywood with only 2 hit 1 semi hit and above avarage and all flop….only krishh3 and dhoom 3 two real actor amir and hrithik are last hope for bollywood in 2013

10)Ye jawaani hai deewani or Bullet Raja

  • @SUMAN
2012 also had just Agneepath,Kahaani as successes but later it was one of the best years of Indian cinema.

  • It’s when we see the lists of all released films that we notice… so many films fail to earn back the investment! But I think the second half of the year will see better business with all the biggies having a release.
I think whatever anyone says… we all know deep within… if it’s good content (which is 99% guaranteed because Aamir Khan is part of it :D ), Dhoom 3 will rock the world! I think every year, an Aamir Khan film should be released on xmas :)

  • @SRK the flop actor, may i remind u, dhoom 2 was hrithik’s film so its basically hrithik(d2) defeated hrithik(krrish) !! so its d hrithik factor dat u shud nvr evr frget !
