We have around 6-7 bankable stars in the industry today and quite a few top directors, and almost all of them are targeting the big weekends. Historically, the most successful release periods in the last 5-6 years are:
- Christmas (PK, Dhoom 3, 3 Idiots, Bajirao Mastani)
- Eid (Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Kick, Chennai Express, Ek Tha Tiger)
- Diwali (Krrish 3, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Happy New Year)
- Post IPL (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Rowdy Rathore, Ready, Holiday)
- Independence Day weekend (Ek Tha Tiger, Singham Returns)
- Republic Day weekend (Airlift, Agneepath, Jai Ho, Baby)
- Gandhi Jayanti weekend (Bang Bang, Singh Is Bling)
There is a huge crunch for favourable release periods, which has resulted in production houses booking release dates 1-2 years in advance. The Khans target three of the most lucrative festive periods; Eid, Christmas and Diwali. Since Akshay Kumar has 3-4 releases every year, he usually targets Republic Day (Airlift, Baby), Post-IPL (Rowdy Rathore, Holiday, Housefull 3), Independence Day (OUATIMD, Brothers, Rustom) and Gandhi Jayanti (Singh Is Bling).
Hrithik managed to get a solo release during Diwali when Krrish 3 became a huge blockbuster at the box office. However, since then, the 4th biggest superstar in the industry today, has had to release his films against others. It’ll be 3 consecutive clashes for Hrithik; Bang Bang released with Haider, Mohenjo Daro is scheduled to release against Akshay’s Rustom and Kaabil has now been announced on the same day as Ajay Devgn’s Baadshaho.
Meanwhile, Ajay has bigger ambitions. He has already booked three major dates; Shivaay for Diwali 2016, Baadshaho for Republic Day 2017 and Sons Of Sardaar for Diwali 2017. He hasn’t been intimidated by the Khans in the past and has probably decided to break their festive monopoly.
Younger stars like Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh have been growing steadily in the industry and if films like Dishoom and Befikre do well, there is no reason why they wouldn’t want bigger dates.
The massive success of Bajirao Mastani has also given immense confidence to smaller filmmakers and lesser stars to take on the mighty Khans at the box office. Prior to the release of Dilwale and Bajirao during Christmas last year, releasing the SLB directed film was considered to be a suicidal move by the trade. The result at the domestic box office though, has shaken up the industry.
It has also made the festive weekends more desirable for a lot of other people. The belief is, if the content is strong and the film is backed by a big banner, the Khans are not invincible at the box office. In fact, it could even prove to be beneficial because a clash results in free media publicity and pre-release hype.
2016 is going to be a year of box office clashes, but 2017 could be even bigger.

It’ll be big mistakes for small-film makers if they decide to go against the two mighty khans just because the little small teesra khan is easy to be taken on.
Don’t worry Hrithik will replace teesra khan. I love that last part of Ajay. Never been intimidated by the Khan’s and breaks their monopoly. Hehe again it’s been pointed to Teesra khan again. They just forgot to add Khiladi. He trashed him twice already on Diwali.

From d last few days ppl r going crazy due to d latest poster of salman which s released n appreciated a lot by fans n also disliked by lots of guys due 2 d clash factor.
There r plenty of time left for d D Day but evry1 started fighting n trolling . just imagine what will going 2 happen in d month of June n July when we get a confirmation from d both side.

More production houses with good scripts and films should challenge the big release dates of the Khans.
I thought SRK is businessman- but after Dilwale- He doesnt seem to me.
He should have released Dilwale on Christmas- There was a chance that film should have done 180- 200crs
But ego has taken big part.

Bahubali came one week prior to EID and BB. Probable the worst time to release a movie as per trade pundit still it did 110cr+ from Hindi dubbed version.
I feel stars should stop running only after big box office collection but start doing what Akki has done with Airlift. Smart budgeting and positioning of the product to make it more profitable.
I understand you need big budget to make a movie like Baahubali and Bajirao Mastani. But what i cant understand why you need 150 cr to make a PRDP, 125 cr for Dilwale and 130 cr for Bang bang.

In December last year we saw the release of the Rohit Shetty directed film Dilwale featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. The film which was produced by Red Chillies and Rohit Shetty Productions, despite featuring a star studded cast and insane promotions did not perform as expected at the box office. However, now months after its release we hear that Shah Rukh Khan, whose production Red Chillies took over the distribution of the film in India has decided to refund the individual distributors to a certain extent for the losses incurred.
In fact back in 2001 and 2005, Shah Rukh Khan had refunded the individual distributors of his films Asoka (Eros) and Paheli (UTV), after both films underperformed at the box office. As a direct result of the actor’s 2001 film Asoka underperforming at the box office, Shah Rukh’s subsequent release Chalte Chalte was sold for a much lower price. On similar lines after the failure of Paheli, distributors of Shah Rukh’s next venture Om Shaanti Om were given first right of refusal to acquire the film.
Dilwale’s underperformance at a press conference Shah Rukh had said, “I don’t think the film has done as well as it should have. I am personally disappointed with that”, well now the actor has decided on reimbursing 50% of the losses incurred by the distributors. However, the interesting part here is that as of last count Dilwale had done approx. Rs. 150 cr net business in India and Rs. 174 cr gross in the overseas markets, while the satellite rights were sold for Rs. 70 cr to Sony MSM. Music rights of the film were sold to Sony for Rs. 18 cr. With the sale of these rights Shah Rukh quite literally made a killing on the project earning close to Rs. 150+ crores as profit!
SRK had set a domestic distribution target with a minimum guarantee (MG) of Rs. 130 cr; but since Dilwalecollected around Rs. 150 cr at the India box office, the distributors share would have amounted to approx. Rs. 70 to 75 cr which meant a loss of around 55 to 60 cr cumulatively for the individual distributors pan India. According to our reports, Shah Rukh has refunded close to Rs. 25 cr to cover up 50% loss to distributors asking them to bear the rest. If that wasn’t all, sources close to the actor and his production mention that Shah Rukh has in fact, prima facie also consented to these distributors getting first right of refusal for his next release Raees.
With this news we guess SRK is indeed a ‘Bade Dilwala’ and a large hearted Raees.
Indicine it is too early to say that small star can release the movie with BIG KHANS the success ratio is very low only one movie BM and people are thinking of clash against do it again the result will speak itself.
