Black Friday – Movie Review

Black Friday, directed by Anurag Kashyap, is based on crime reporter Hussain Zaidi’s book by the same name.

Black Friday is a movie that depicts the terror that struck Mumbai on March 12, 1993. It was a day when serial blasts ripped through Mumbai, which left an unpleasant color in minds of Mumbaiites. Though the color of the massacre has vanished, even the thought of it evokes the same fear and pain. Black Friday takes us back in time painting this ghastly incidence, the blast and the aftermath and evokes emotions of sadness and fear in us.

Anurag Kashyap narrates the events leading up to the 1993 Blasts and the ruthless investigation that takes place after the blasts which killed 350 plus people and left more than a thousand injured and homeless.

Direction – Anurag Kashyap has handled the subject very well and his execution is praise worthy. He narrates the story in chapters. The first half of the movie keeps you at the edge of your seats while the second half drags a bit, but does not disappoint.

About 5 to 10 minutes from the second half can be chopped off for a greater impact. There are no typical Bollywood songs in the movie. The background music increases the powerful impact of the movie! The Cinematography (Natarajan Subramaniam) is top class.

Acting – Kay Kay (Rakesh Mari) is in top form and delivers a brilliant performance. Popular television actor Aditya Shrivastav as Baadshah is perfect. Pankaj Jha, Arbaaz Ali Khan, Zakir Hussain, Pratima Kazmi are good. Vijay Maurya as Dawood Ibrahim has nothing much to do, but he does resemble India’s Most wanted criminal.

Overall – Black Friday is reality cinema at its best. The gripping storyline, execution, award worthy performances and the hard hitting facts are the major plus points of the movie. Black Friday – A time machine to terror and fear.

Box Office Prediction – It will do just average business. Reason being availability of the pirated copy of the movie in the market from the last 2 years. But strong word-of-mouth could result in business picking up after a week or so.

Rating – Rating: ★★★½☆ (A must watch if you love reality cinema)

Black Friday is getting great reviews. The much awaited movie is definetly worth a watch. Go watch it
