Best Hindi Films of 2013 that you must watch!

At the end of the year, when we look at all the films that were released that particular year and correlate the quality of the films with their box office performance we find plenty of films that under-performed at the ticket window. These are films which deserved to be seen by more amount of people and are hence called under-seen or lesser seen films.

The top lesser seen films of 2013 according to us are as follows:

Lesser seen hindi films

Lesser seen hindi films

Kai Po Che: This coming-of-age story of three boys in Gujarat set at the onset of the new millennium was based on the best-selling book by Chetan Bhagat “Three Mistakes Of My Life”. It was one of the most appreciated films of the year winning over the hearts of both audiences and critics alike thanks to its soul-stirring acting, fine direction and the splendid music. It also gave Bollywood Sushant Singh Rajput.

Mere Dad Ki Maruti: Yash Raj Films’ youth wing Y-Films produced this rib-tickling comedy film about a brazen teenager who loses his father’s Maruti Ertiga car trying to impress the girl he likes. Yes, the MDKM was filled with the stereotypical, loud characters we seen in films based on Punjabi films but the humour here made the film worth a watch. Sakeeb Saleem was fantastic in the lead role.

Jolly LLB: Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani starred in the small budget film by Subhash Kapoor which showed us the inner workings of the courts of India and the corruption which is rampant in these places. It did go on to be declared a hit, but a film which hits you so hard and yet manages to make you smile deserved to make more money. Subhash Kapoor got the chance to direct the next Munnabhai flick thanks to this film.

Bombay Talkies: Four different directors with different styles of film-making came together to make their own short films and Bombay Talkies puts together these 4 films dedicated to Indian cinema. All of the stories conveyed a deep understated cinema has on the lives of all Indians. Our personal favorite story in the film? We loved Dibakar Banerjee’s story the most – Nawazuddin Siddiqui shines like a star in his role.

Gippi: Kudos to producer Karan Johar for investing in a movie like Gippi. Sonam Nair made this sweet little film about an overweight teenage girl going through typical teenage problems. The best part of this film was that every person could identify with Gippi as almost everyone of us have had our ups and downs in school life. It deserves a lot more viewers!

Fukrey: In our opinion if there is any production house in India which has perfected the buddy comedy genre it is Excel Productions. Fukrey was the funniest film of the year about four bumbling youngsters in India who get lost in a scheme and how they make their way out of that murky world. Debutante Varun Sharma as Choocha was a standout performer.

B.A Pass: Ajay Behl crowd sourced this small 2cr film based on The Railway Aunty by Mohan Sikka. It was a dangerously unsoothing experience for the viewer who is not used to the old Paharganj area of Delhi and the type of stuff which takes place in the gullys there. It recovered its budget by earning more than 6cr but Shilpa Shukla’s bold acting deserved the be seen by a far greater number of people.

Ship Of Theseus: Anand Gandhi didn’t like the type of films Bollywood was churning out so he decided to fund a film which would challenge mainstream Hindi cinema with its sheer audacity to go against the odds. Even though the budget of Ship of Theseus was very less, it never felt like a small budget films thanks to the brilliant cinematography. Above all, Ship of Theseus was a darn good film.

The Lunchbox: There was great amount of controversy in 2013 when The Lunchbox was shunned for the Oscars in favour of The Good Read. The people who voiced their opinion in favour of The Lunchbox had reason to be angry. The film was an almost perfect cinematic sketch of the forlornness of humans, about the disconnect of couples in the modern world and finally about not losing hope. The ending was surprising, though.

Shahid: Shahid was based on the lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi who was assasinated in 2010 in Mumbai. What stood out in the film were the real performances by actors Rajkumar Rao, KK Menon, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Tigmanshu Dhulia. The film was shot in real locations and had an authentic feel about it. If you haven’t watched it, you definitely should.

Honourable Mentions: Lootera, Mickey Virus, D-Day, Sixteen, Table No. 21, Go Goa Gone, Madras Cafe and David.

  • Great article. Although, I think you may have missed ‘Madras Cafe’, and I have had ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns’ in honorable mention instead of Mickey Virus.

  • It’s Lootera that totally moved me. It was the first indian film which made me cry. I cried for half an hour. I used to hate Sonakshi for repeating the same masala roles, but Sona has shown her versatility through Lootera. Ranveer was great too.

LOOTERA is my all time fav movie along with 3 idiots, Veer Zaara, Guzaarish etc. VOTE FOR LOOTERA.

  • @indicine:why no description about lootera??
Also its songs are great and meaningful. The film and its songs will stay in my heart for ever.. I liked madras cafe too.

  • I feel the Lunchbox is an overrated film. It wasn’t bad, but nothing great. Got a headache after watching it.

    @sakhi:kabhi toh honest hua karo.

  • my fav movies of 2013 are :
    1: Ranjhanna.. 2: Fukrey.. 3: Lootera.. 4: Special26.. 5: Aashiqui 2.. 6: Ramleela.. 7: kai poche…8: Sixteen.. 9: yeh jawani hai deewani..

Overrated movies of 2013 are Chennai express… krrish3…Dhoom3…Bhag milka bhag…Lunch box.

  • Out of the above mentioned movies I’ve watched Kai Po Che, Jolly LLB, Lootera and Table no.21. And yes, they are definitely must watch movies;specially Kai Po Che, Lootera & Table no. 21. I really wanna watch The Lunchbox. But I wasn’t still lucky enough to find a good copy of the movie with subtitles. :(

  • @Indicine, good article. But why haven’t you included Lootera, Madras Cafe and Go Goa Gone? These three films were classics, I loved Go Goa Gone.. it was one of the most underrated films of 2013.

  • Lootera is the 2nd most critically acclaimed movie of the year. But sadly, there is no description of lootera in this article by indicine.

  • Is the author of the article, by any chance, Karan Johar? Except the disastrous Gori Tere Pyaar mein and YJHD (which can’t be put here).. all other Dharma disasters have been included here. Including Bombay Talkies.

  • Where the hell has Special 26 and Madras Cafe gone??? Gippi, Sixteen and Mickey Virus all the super duper craps of 2013 have been included

  • Kai po che, fukrey, jolly LLB are ahead of lootera? ?why? ! Lootera is better. @ranveer,sonakshifans,vote for lootera.

  • @queensrk hahaha

    True

I dont know about under seen but definitely 1 film which was over seen was Chennai Depress…. KRK said it right on his review of BOSS that south audience are bewakuf… Nothing illustrates that better than this Chennai Depress film- around 5 million commuters down south bought tickets rightly to board the Chennai Express train but instead got wrongly hoaxed into watching Chennai Depress…! :-P

Back to topic- most under seen film of 2013 was definitely Crappy Express… Where were the billions and billions of lungiwalas around the globe during Eid…? Its 2013 and youtube king still does not have the biggest hit of the year…? Shameful fans…

  • @navin – so what if CE was not the most seen film of the year? Atleast it was second. Even Krrish 3 couldn’t beat CE. Only Dhoom 3 could because it is the biggest brand in Bollywood. Wait and watch. Happy New Year will be the top grosser in 2014.

  • I think those who are voting for the lunchbox haven’t watched that film.only they heard that it is a great movie.that’s why they are voting.
