Badmaash Company Music Review

The Yash Raj Films banner seems to have a certain unending inclination for movies with a conning story line. In the recent past a few movies such as Bunty Aur Babli, Dhoom, Kaminey, Race etc. have all fared well at the box office with a similar swindling story line. Badmaash Company basically tries to explore the lives of four young individuals who are ready to take any way life offers them to be successful and triumphant. The movie promises to highlight various facets of the human life including betrayal, deceit and fraud. With a movie that is based on a lot of ecstasy, buzz and excitement, does the music have anything or a lot to offer?

“Ayaashi”, the first to go on the play list of “Badmaash Company” offers a mishmash of various genres and directly portrays the bad-boyish image the movie is soon going to show in action to its audience. This song has K.K. blending in with Pritam’s music offering an amalgamation of death metal, hip hop, a dash of reggae and whole lot of electronic music. In spite of all the high sounding music, the hodgepodge appeal the song has to it through the diverse genres experimented upon, the song fails for two reasons. Firstly, K.K. has a very fine tuned, melodious voice which sounds best only when heard particularly with slow, mellow numbers. Secondly, the Music has been experimented upon completely, and the high pitched electronic sound in the background and its rendition with the vocals ends up giving its listeners a head ache. Perhaps the video might ultimately end up giving to it a whole new zing.

Amidst all the brouhaha about introducing a western influence on typical Indian genre, the music directors perfectly strike the right chord when it comes to upholding the desi influence. “Chaska” a very peppy number is slackly of the Punjabi Rock Genre. The usage of Indian instruments like the dhol, gives the song a very sprightly touch and can serve just perfect for any Indian dance party. The very multitalented Krishna has rendered his voice for this one with a lot of energy and good vibes to give away!

“Jingle Jingle” comes across again as a very situational song which must be construed with the flow of the movie. The lyrics give away a lot of details regarding various dreams and aspirations the actors share in the movie. Mohit Chauhan lends his voice for this number and the sudden western influence without a proper nexus being drawn to the Indian rendition of “Jingle Jingle” again makes this number muddled. Mohit Chauhan is known for his adaptability to new tunes and a complete control over his tenor; however he seems to be drifting away very frequently.

We also find Rahat Fateh Ali Khan giving his soulful voice for “fakeera”. The song is supposed to give away a very Indian appeal to its listeners. Although, one would admit that the song is soulful and very poignant because of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s, the music seems to be composed with a lot of apathy. Both “Jingle Jingle” and “Fakeera” have a lot in common in their presentation.

Finally, without much adieu, the title song of the movie “Badmaash Company” has been sung by Benny Dayal. The song begins with a lot of retro influence and suddenly divulges a very modern, foot tapping background music. The vocals and the music in all its entirety seems to be well blended.

So, the verdict is: 2.25/5 stars for Badmaash Company
