Baahubali vs Bajrangi Bhaijaan: Box Office Collection Comparison

It’s been a record-breaking couple of weeks for film business in India. Both ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ are doing extraordinary business in the domestic markets and outside. But comparing a Telugu film ‘Baahubali’ with a Hindi film is not as simple and straight forward as comparing two Hindi films. There are so many factors that differentiate the two film industries.

We have listed some of the most important factors below:

  • Entertainment Tax: There is a ‘HUGE’ difference between entertainment taxes for Hindi movies and Telugu or for that matter any other regional film. For example, in Maharastra, Hindi films pay approximately 50% as entertainment tax (varies depending on ticket prices), while Marathi films are tax free in the same state. For example, if 10,000 tickets of both Marathi and Hindi films are sold at Rs 300 each, the nett collections of Marathi film will be Rs 30 Lakhs, while the collections of Hindi films will be Rs 15 lakhs only as about 50% goes towards entertainment tax to the government. For Hindi films, entertainment taxes varies from state to state. Telugu films are charged 15% entertainment tax in home state, while the same tax as Hindi films would be applicable outside Andhra/Nizam territory, including dubbed versions.
  • Language: The second factor is language. Just like English films have a massive advantage all over the world, Hindi films too benefit due to the fact that Hindi is understood by a majority people in India. So a film like ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ would have a decisive advantage over ‘Baahubali’ as most people outside Andhra Pradesh and Telangana do not understand Telugu. Yes, ‘Baahubali’ was dubbed in various other languages, but the experience of watching a film in its original language is entirely different.
  • Stars: Who doesn’t know Salman Khan in India? The superstar has a fan-following in every nook and corner of the country, which significantly increases the business potential of ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. On the other hand, Telugu actors have limited appeal outside their home state. In fact, Rana Daggubati, since he has done a few Hindi films, is a better known actor in other states as compared to Prabhas. The biggest superstar in Telugu films, the likes of Pawan Kalyan and Chiranjeevi, are well-known, but the business that their films generate is restricted to South Indian states.
  • History: ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ is breaking opening records in India, but even if it does well enough to beat the Rs 340 crore (nett domestic) record of ‘PK’, it will only beat the film by a small margin. ‘Baahubali’ on the other hand is not even competing with other Telugu films. It has already more than DOUBLED the highest grossing Telugu film of all time and should go on to put up much bigger numbers. To give that some perspective, it’s similar to ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ collecting Rs 700 crore at the domestic box office, thereby trouncing the existing record of ‘PK’ and doing more than double the business. That’s how earth-shattering and record breaking the collections of ‘Baahubali’ have been. The previous highest grossing dubbed regional film was Rs 19 crore, the Hindi version of ‘Baahubali’ has already collected Rs 68 crore, which is more than 3 times the previous best!
  • Budget: The two-part series of ‘Baahubali’ has been made at an estimated budget of Rs 225 – 250 crore. The scale of the movie is comparable to some of those Hollywood films. ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ is a smaller film, that was made on a budget of less than 75 crore (cost of production).

Baahubali vs Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Now that we have listed out the key factors that differentiate Kabir Khan’s ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ and S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali’, check out the box office collections of the film. We have distributors share, net collections (excluding entertainment tax) and gross collections (including entertainment tax).

Also note, that we do not believe in differentiating different versions of the film i.e Hindi, Telugu, Tamil etc. The cost of dubbing and release is included in the ‘LANDING COSTS’. Even if ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’ was released in Telugu and Tamil, the maximum collections from regional versions would have been around 10 crore – and collections of the Hindi version in those states would be affection. It balances out in the end.

  • 2015 has been landmark year for indian cinema as this year has shown content rich film can regularly score big at bo irrespective of opening

this is the reason y first two 100cr blockbusters were a kangana starrer and a varun-shraddha starrer despite release of 2akki films and 1 ranbir film
2 Hollywood films fr d frst tm hv scored 100cr while a south dubbed film is heading towards 80-90cr pan india.
a niche film like piku scored almost as much as a massy hit like gabbar.

5films scored Monday bigger or similar to friday
    dlkh piku twmr baahubali bajrangi

let’s hope this trend continues for as long as possible

  • Baahubali is rocking…..!!… Occupancy to bahubali is more than Bajrangi bhaijaan…..!!…

  • @indicine i don’t understand why my comments are kept under moderation for hours while those of others keeps getting posted within minutes.

coming to the post, it is good to see a thorough detail of bahubali’s collections. I was really wondering what its all india nett collections as everyone was busy posting the highest no.(read worldwide gross) Thanks for this article.

  • salman khan is the biggest superstar of india The superstar has a fan following in every nook and corner of the country too much fun who cares Baahubali the South Indian Actor

  • yes, everything is clear now… Bajrangi
Bhaijaan is a sure shots winner beating Baahubali:-)

  • Thank u Indicine…

I understand that bajrangi bhaijaan can easily beat bahubali in less than 12 days…. So winner is bb….. Hope everyone understands…

  • BB’s all India gross, overseas gross & worldwide gross will be way more than bahubali & all India nett will be in the same range of both movies.

  • Have already watched BB two times. Will watch one more time again and then I’ll watch Brothers. Even though I love Ajay, I’ll skip Drishyam as I’ve seen the original multiple times and watching BB has already drained my pocket. .lol
    #SalmanKhan
    #AkshayKumar
    #AjayDevgn
    #MyFavs

  • I still feel that bajrangi baijjan will fall short by 15-20 cr of PK
    1st week-185
    2nd week-85
    3rdweek-30
    Rest-15-30

    Total 315-320 Realistic fig..
To cross pk it has to cross 100cr 2nd week which seems impossible at this point unless 2nd weekend is extraordinary..

Hope it crosses Pk but seems impossible at this point

  • BB’s 5days overseas collections is approx 70cr. Upto 2nd week it will collect over 120cr and surpass all srk movies collections(mnik)….Too much fun.

  • salman said his films will work even if critics rate negative
    .
    .
I like to say that ?
    .
    .
avoid extraordinary holidays days like Eid or Deepawali or Christmas , then he ( salman ) will get to know how much this reviews affect a film .
    .
    .
holidays like Eid or Deepawali or Christmas can save film from flop because in this three special day , film earn more than expectations in weekend or a week or 10 days n about 80% of lifetime collection come just a week or 10 days due to price hike , big screens size n people are free catch a film ( people are in holiday ) n huge crowd due to holidays
    .
    .
After a week or 10 days, film collections go down even holidays release films and it is every easy to break records or earn more money in holiday period and too hard to make or break record with normal release date
    .
    .
so called normal day release pk or d3 has long holidays till 1st January , both earned because of that , pk has perfect release due to it release 6 day before Christmas and after that more holidays till 1st January
any film can earn big collection in its 1st week but will straggle if film is not more than good , good time started in 2nd week so it earn big and also due to Christmas , price hike and treated as Christmas release
    .
    .
look an average film can break many records with extraordinary holidays release like Eid or Deepawali or Christmas

same average film can not break any records if it is not release in extraordinary holidays like Eid or Deepawali or Christmas
    .
to break records in ordinary holidays or normal days , film should be very good at least !
    .
    .
This is the difference between extraordinary holidays and ordinary holidays or normal days !
    .
    .
so salman , you should release your films without extraordinary holidays like Eid or Deepawali or Christmas 1st then talk about your fans love or your star power or critics failure !
    .
    .
STAR POWER COUNT ONLY WITHOUT EXTRAORDINARY HOLIDAYS LIKE EID OR DEEPAWALI OR CHRISTMAS
    .
    HRITHIK ? BANG BANG ! ~ 181 C
    SALMAN ? JH ~ 110 C
    AMIR ? TALAASH ~ 90 C
    SRK ? MNIK ~ 70 or – C
    .
all are their last release films without extraordinary holidays like Eid or Deepawali or Christmas

  • BB’s 5days overseas collections(69cr) are 10cr more than bahubali’s 12days overseas collections (59cr). And some people said bahubali is record breaker in overseas.

  • Ek qu hai indicine. . Plz reply.

Telegu film ka jo tax hai uske jyada hindi film ka hai. . . But when usi hindi film ka dubbed(telegu) version release hota then tax kaise katega? Wo film ka jo hindi me tax katna chahiye wohi hoga ya fir telegu bubb ke wajah se tax nhi katega. Plz reply. Btw, very lovely post.

  • most of people thinks that part1 of baahubal is whole movie and budget of this part is 250. thats why people more atracted by the movie baahubali. lets see who will beat pk’s net india collection.

  • Its really best article indicine…..people who dont knw diff between gross net n distributer share will understand things…most importantly people will understand the difference between sucess of bahubali n bajrangi bhaijaan. …

  • Gud Article…Admins…wit superb info provided…da bottom Line is…both are Masterpieces in der own ryt..if nt Masterpiece dan almost near to it….coincidence is dat Both the Movie came in a week and even in dat difference did Record breaking business….So in short we can say CINEMA Won

  • @indicine according to u which is s.s. rajamouli’s best film? Magadheera or baahubali or someone else?

  • @ indicine- You dont beleive in differentiate different version but can they earn same amount with the telugu version in north india and hindi version in south india? obviously not on that basis one day sholay and hahk type movies will become less hits in india because if baahubali can earn that huge amount in north india who knows if bajrangi could earn more because bajrangi going strong in overseas dont compare bajrangi with recent salman movies and check record of maine pyar kiya. will you add its dubbed tamil version earning in its total net gross in india? then it will be highest grosser of all time by beating sholay.

  • So bahubali beat krrish 3 nett collection 244 cr….
will definitely cross 285 cr of dhoom 3….
    bahubali n bajrangi bhaijaan rocks….

  • Both of them are on phenomenal run at the box office.

But we have seen similar type of collections as Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Bollywood via Dhoom 3, PK, and HNY opening weekend, but Baahubali has absolutely smashed all the existing records in Telugu or any South Indian industry by surpassing Robot in matter of days. Baahubali has also generated a record distributors share by beating PK.

  • TheTeluguversion of maine pyar kiya Prema Paavuraaluran for 25 weeks atVisakhapatnamand had 100 plus day run at six centres inAndhra Pradesh.[13]It was dubbed inTamil languageasKaadhal Oru Kavithaiand inMalayalamasIna Praavukal.Maine Pyar Kiyahad also been dubbed inSpanishasTe Amo. The film also proved its universal appeal with a glorious 10-week premiere run atLima.[12]

  • @indicine..u forget to mention one important point, nearly 70 to 80 percent theatre where tamil or Telugu film run are single screen..if a bollywood movie’s net clctn is 100cr.distribtr share will be 55-60..while 100cr tamil and telugu movies dstbtr share will be 70+cr
