Q. Don’t you think that Khan movies grossed 200 above only due to festive weekends. Whenever they release in non-holiday it managed to do around 100 crores only. Akshay, however, didn’t get any festive period still his films grosses 100 crores. If Akshay got Christmas – Eid – Diwali weekend, don’t you think it can do 200 crore?
A. You cannot take credit away from the Khans. Eid as a festive weekend was non-existent before Salman Khan came, dominated and made it his own. Christmas was considered to be a non-favourable period because of extreme cold in North India before Aamir Khan started releasing his films and made it the biggest period for Hindi films.
As for Akshay Kumar, he has got several favourable release periods, including the four biggest and third most successful period i.e Post IPL:
- Holiday – Post IPL
- Baby – Republic Day weekend
- Brothers - Independence Day (big day for film business)
- Singh Is Bling - Gandhi Jayanti (Haider and Bang Bang collected more than 200 crore combined)
- Airlift – Republic Day weekend
- Housefull 3 – Post IPL
It’s not like Akshay is releasing his films during normal weekends. He’s picking the best out of what’s available and he’s getting solo releases – something which Hrithik didn’t get for Bang Bang and won’t get for Mohenjo Daro.
Also, even if you release Brothers on Christmas, it won’t work, like we’ve seen with Tees Maar Khan which released during Christmas 2010.
Not being negative or critical of Akshay here, but there is potential for big films like Brothers / OUATIMD / Housefull 3 to get to 150 crore and beyond during non-festive periods. Like we’ve seen with films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and others.

Not only khans,even ranveer-deepika movie did 180 plus on Christmas so ofcourse it’s because of festivals, their movies does extra collection.
Neutral audience comes out on festivals to watch movies ,not only fan of That particular actor!
I feel Akshay can deliver 200 CR on EDX . But the problem has been that he has given flops on EDX before .
2009 Diwali : 3 way clash between Blue, All The Best and Main Aur Mrs. Khanna . The result ATB was successful, Blue was Flop and MAMK was Disaster . The opening of Blue was higher than all the three but it could not sustain the momentum afterwards . It was the most expensive movie made in India at that time and it was a novel concept of Underwater Action Sequences but there was nothing extraordinary in the movie .
2010 Diwali : G3 vs Action Replayy .
G3 was a much bigger movie than AR . It was a foolish decision by the Producers and Vipul Shah to clash with G3 . AR was a massive failure and one of the worst movies of AK . The whole concept of time travel was stupid and childish . AK looked pathetic in Wig and Prosthetic Teeth .
2010 Christmas : TMK vs Toonpur Ka Superhero . The pre release buzz of TMK was phenomenal . Akshay, Katrina, Christmas and huge popularity to Sheila Ki Jawaani and the result was Semi Hit and one of the worst movies made in Bollywood . TKS had Ajay and was made for kids and 50 % of the movie was animated so it had no chance to beat TMK . This was the last movie of Akshay to release on EDX till now and the next one maybe is Robot 2.0 . If Akshay can learn from his previous mistakes than he can enter 200 CR Club in 2017 . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let him first cross opening day figure of 30cr…later think of 200cr…already many flops he has given during Edx period
Obviously it can do 200crs provided he brings a big budget film which appeals to a larger section of audience.
Today most films that Khans release are of 130-140crs budget,they look big ,appeal to many and are event films that one would go and enjoy on festivals.Most have top Bollywood actresses too.
While most Akki films are of 70-80crs budget like a Gabbar or SIB,hence they don’t get thunderous response,they are not big event films.Brothers looked big but it wasn’t appealing to many,it was too dark,heavy and gory.

but my question is why only EDX ? why not they made Republic Day, Independence day, G.Jayanti or any other date except EDX as per EDX holidays ?

EDX was powerful dates much before khans Films but just need repeated/ Multiple releases of just one star at just Holidays. that’s why it turn Outstanding date
But same KHANS can’t turn Republic Day, Independence day, G.Jayanti or any other Holidays except EDX into Outstanding Date as per EDX

I think last year all his films were holiday realeses,Brothers which was expected to easily cross 100cr on Indepence Day,but the film ended up being a flop.
Some people are giving excuses like he releases 3-4 movies per year, he releases his movies non holiday weekend, hence not able to give big grossers.

Nice answer Salman made Eid day very huge,thats why when he announce his film on Eid,everyone will make way.The audience will always choose Salman films on Eid when it clashes with any film.

Bigger star means bigger budget! Because producers invest more on those stars who can guarantee bigger grossers. Can you imagine a tushar kapur or vivek oberoy movie to be made of higher amount than Akki movies??? Absolutely no, because Akki>>>tushar kapur.

Akki should focus on doing big budget films instead of doing alot of moderate budget films,big budget films usually create alot of buzz among the audience hence having good opening i.e Shivaay has been on the news since it was announced.

Akki only can give 200cr on his dream.
Will agree with babajis comments @ 5:42 pm. Scale of the movie does make a difference and thats where Akshay has not focused much. Plus some gap between the movies will help also.
Similarly Ajay can also enter the 200 cr list coming with a big movie. Had Shivay been a solo release this year it would have been a very strong candidate for entering in the 200 cr list but the clash will have an impact. Similarly Ajay’s SoS also earned 100 cr plus in a clash with a very big movie JTHJ. Again were SOS a solo release it could have easily crossed 150 cr which would have been a very big number in 2012 considering Dabang 2 releasing in the same year earned 154 cr.
So coming with a big scale movie plus solo release on EDX with at least two open weeks, both Ajay and Akshay can cross 200 cr.
@ANK, upping the scale means dedicating more days to a film. Akshay is unwilling to give more than 50-60 days to his films. Only exception is Robot 2. So it’s his choice and we need to respect that.

This is a tight SLAP to all those haters who bark on festive release, it’s Salman and Aamir who make EID and Christmas Big Release Period for Hindi Movies and not the vise versa….so respect these two Megastars of Indian Film Industry…
