Aamir Khan, the man who conquered the box office with Ghajini same time last year, returns yet again on Christmas, this time with a comedy directed by Raju Hirani.
The ticket prices for the weekend were hiked by around 100% (double) at some places, not in all cities as reported by the media though. Neither the makers nor the distributors are to be blamed for the hike, the price of tickets is decided by the multiplex owners.
The advance booking that opened earlier this week, was fantastic. The paid previews playing at 2 shows per screen (7PM and 10PM) at multiplexes in select cities were sold out. With Friday being a holiday for Christmas, 3 Idiots will enjoy a extended holiday weekend and should easily be the top earner for the weekend this year.
Weekend collections, as predicted earlier, should easily touch 30 crores and with extremely positive initial reports, Aamir Khan should score a box office hat-trick with 3 Idiots.

Update: The paid previews, as predicted has broken the record of Ghajini. The percentage of occupancy was lower than Ghajini but with previews held at more than 650 screens all over India, the business crossed the Rs 2 crore mark, a day before its release.
Today (Friday) was a holiday and even the morning shows (7 – 10AM) at multiplexes were houseful. Friday, if paid previews were any indication, should easily break the 10 crore mark. Collections should be somewhere between 10 – 11 crores.
When we spoke to Deepak of Big Cinemas, he was quite upbeat about the business “For the first time this year the morning shows were sold out. The advance booking for Saturday and Sunday is great, we expect every show to be houseful over the weekend.”
Rs 35 crores for the weekend including paid previews is a possibility and if 3 Idiots sustains on Monday, Week 1 nett could cross 50 crores.

3 Idiots is now officially the highest grossing film on its opening day (Friday), the collections are strong all over and the word of mouth is outstanding. Aamir, Hirani, Vinod Chopra and others associated with the film, couldn’t really have asked for more.
The movie is all set to be the first and only Bollywood blockbuster of the year.

Three Idiots Starts On Historic Note At Multiplexes

Three Idiots has taken a historic opening at multiplexes this morning. The first shows were held as early as 6.00 am this morning and some shows were 80% full which is phenomenal for shows that early in the morning at multiplexes. The first day business is likely to humungous as shows from late morning are likely to be showing a 95-100% turnout.
The paid previews yesterday had a bumper response of 90-100% on around 700 paid previews across the country.
There have been films lately like Kurbaan and Paa which have been good in paid previews but taken dull starts on Friday but Three Idiots is totally different and looks set for a huge run at multiplexes if early morning shows are any indication. Most single screens across the country will be having there first shows around 10.00 am and it remains to be seen what is the response.

Three Idiots has set a new record for Paid previews by grossing 2.25 crore nett approx. The previous record holder Ghajini did 1.75 crore nett approx. The paid preview figures for some circuits are below.

MUMBAI: The paid preview shows of 3 Idiots have collected an estimated amount of Rs 27.10 million (Rs 2.71 crore) net in India on Thursday evening, which is the highest ever so far.
The paid preview collections of Ghajini were Rs 16 million (Rs 1.60 crore) net.
According to information available with Businessofcinema.com, the circuit wise collections of 3 Idiots paid preview is as follows:
Bombay: Rs 1.40 crore
Nizam: Rs 35 lakh
CP, CI & Rajasthan: Rs 30 lakh
Delhi, UP, Punjab: Rs 55 lakh
Assam Bengal, Bihar: Rs 17.50 lakh
Pertinent to note here is that 3 Idiots had higher number of shows in its paid preview (700) than Ghajini and the ticket price for the movie has also been marked up.
According to estimates by Businessofcinema.com, the opening weekend collections of the movie should be anywhere in the range of Rs 325 – Rs 350 million (Rs 32.50 – Rs 35 crore). The opening weekend (Friday – Saturday) collections of Ghajini was Rs 280 million (Rs 28 crore).
3 Idiots saw unprecedented occupancy levels in multiplexes across India today. Multiplexes were running to occupancy of approximately 75-80 percent in the morning shows on Friday and this is likely to shoot up to almost full house in the evening and night shows. The opening day (Friday) collections of the movie are likely to touch the Rs 100 milion (Rs 10 crore) net mark in India.
Speaking exclusively to Businessofcinema.com, Reliance BIG Pictures’ head of domestic distribution Kamal Gianchandani says, “The movie has opened to a phenomenal response and is on its way to become the highest ever opening weekend grosser.”
The response in overseas markets like Australia, New Zealand, the UAE, USA and the UK is also phenomenal

Three Idiots has hit the box office like a hurricane and has smashed many first day records at the box office. All records at multiplexes have been smashed as it records collections which are just unbelievable. Many multiplexes have recorded double the collections of Ghajini for the first Friday. The first day business was an unimaginable 12.75 crore nett.
The previous record was for first Friday was 9.25 crore nett recorded by Ghajini last December. It must be noted that the Three Idiots first day was a Christmas Day holiday while Ghajini first Friday was a normal day but even accounting for for that, it is still a phenomenal collection. This takes the Three Idiots total to 15.50 crore nett with paid previews (2.75 crore nett) and the weekend seems to be heading for 37-39 crore nett collections which is out of this world.
