3 Hindi Comedy Films to watch this weekend

There was a time not too long ago when comedy films were popular attractions at the box office. In recent times though, the trend has shifted from situational comedy films like ‘Hungama’ and ‘Garam Masala’ to slapstick over-the-top disasters like ‘Humshakals’ and ‘Besharam’.

Classics like ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ and ‘Hera Pheri’ are films that almost everyone has seen. So we pick 3 comedy films that you should watch this weekend, films that weren’t outrageously funny classics, but super-entertaining nonetheless.

Garam Masala: Like the actor-director duo of Govinda and David Dhawan in the 90s, Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan worked in several films together – most of them were box office hits. Garam Masala was a thoroughly entertaining film that works only because of Akshay’s incredible comic timing. His chemistry with John Abraham and Paresh Rawal’s hilarious act ensured that the film was a runaway hit at the box office. The story is about Mac (Akshay) and Sam (John). Sam gets a promotion and goes on quick vacation. When he returns he finds a loser like Mac dating three women - Deepti (Daisy Bopanna), Puja (Nargis Bagheri) and Sweety (Neetu Chandra). What follows is utter chaos, a comedy of errors and situations. You can watch the movie below!

Haseena Maan Jayegi: Govind, Sanjay Dutt, Kader Khan, Satish Kaushik, Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal in a David Dhawan film! It simply cannot get bigger or better than this. A bunch of extremely talented actors with outstanding comic timing in a film that you can watch a hundred times and still love every scene and dialogue. If you haven’t watched Haseen Maan Jayegi, you must! The story is about Sonu (Sanjay Dutt), Monu (Govinda) and their father Amirchand (Kader Khan).

No Entry: Arguably the best film that Anees Bazmee has directed in his career, No Entry stars Salman Khan in a special appearance. The film though, belongs to Anil Kapoor. Fardeen Khan does a decent job, and so do the leading ladies. No Entry went on to be the biggest blockbuster of 2005 and would find a place in the Top 5 comedy films made between 2005 – 2009, when comedy was the most popular genre at the box office.

  • Akshay Kumar is King of Comedy
Missing those Hera Pheri, Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag type Films We Want to see Akki in Hera-Pheri 3

  • Garam Masala is arguably the most entertaining comedy film by Akshay sir. What a performance by Akshay sir.
One of the most funniest scenes is where Mac and Sam took Neha Dhupia to a restaurant. What a laugh riot

  • Some more comedy films which can also be enjoyed.

    1. Hera Pheri and Awara Paagal Deewana: Paresh Rawal gave one his best performances in both films. In fact it wont be wrong to say that both films worked mainly because of Paresh Rawal.

    2. MunnaBhai Series: Humor with message thats what Munaa bhai is all about. Munna-Circuit is arguably the best bromantic jodi of bollywood.

    3. Golmaal (Both 1979 & 2006): Golmaal 1979 is a laugh riot. Very simple story and exceptional performances. It can be watched “n” no. of times it’s that good. Also Amol Palekar won filmfare best actor award for the same which is very rare for comedy films. (Also a remake of it was tried in 2012 in Bol Bachchan and it was simply pathetic, Disastrous remake).

Also 2006 Golmaal directed by Rohit shetty was again complete laugh riot. Had no story but comedy was very good. None of Rohit Shetty’s movie has been able to match the standard of comedy set by Golmaal 2006.

  • Priyadarshan is the best comedy director by a long way for me…
His films are situational comedies with a feel good sense.

Do watch his most underrated film: Chup Chup ke starring Shahid and Kareena..loved it!

  • that was a golden phase of comedy movies now comedy movies doesn’t work that much
housefull 2 is the last best comedy movie which was enjoyed by everyone

  • The level of comedy films has really fallen in recent years..
They are trying to make loud and slapstick comedies which are unfunny…
Entertainment was a disappointment for me,akki did’nt had to do much..
    and Humshakals was a torture!

    My fav. comedy films:
    1) Golmaal:Fun Unlimited
    2) Garam Masala
    3) Hera Pheri
    4) Welcome
    5) Dhamaal
    6) Mujhse shadi karogi
    7) Chup Chup ke
    8) Heyy Baby
    9) Khatta Meetha
    10) Housefull 2

PS:Have’nt watched No entry and AAA…

  • Don’t know about others, but I personally enjoyed “Heyy Baby”. But I didn’t like “Entertainment” which was a waste of time.

  • No Entry is the best out of those IMO.

@Chulli – Salman had an extended appearance in the film, main characters were Anil’s and Fardeen’s.

  • @Chulli, See Salman’s charms, aura & screen presence! He was in special appearances both in KKHH & No Entry. But he has overshadowed the lead actors so much so that the industry people & the critics have started crediting Salman for the successes of the movie. No need to even talk Karan Arjun & Hum Tum Hare Sanam in which he has totally overshadowed your king beyond any doubts.
And No Entry was promoted as though Salman was playing the main lead. His two songs in the were highlight of the promos of the film.
Boney Kapoor credits Salman for such s humongous success of the movie!

@Babaji ka thullu, no matter how old and wise you get, you can’t simply abandon your hypocrisy. You have not AAA & NO ENTRY & commenting on Comedies???? Most of them are Akki films in your list! Shame!
But you simply keep quiet when Nipun bashes Akki from left to right. But when others especially Arjun Kapoor does, you can’t tolerate it. I am saying not because I like Arjun Kapoor but to point out your hypocrisy!
