Mohenjo Daro: 2 years of research and hard work, rejected in a day

Rustom has emerged victorious in the clash against Mohenjo Daro. The industry is celebrating – because niche films like ‘Rustom’ do not usually achieve the kind of success that the crime-thriller has.

Akshay Kumar is getting all the accolades, not just for the success of his film, but also for the film-choices that he has made in the recent past.

All well deserved.

But while one camp is rejoicing, let’s take a moment to reflect on the pain that the makers of Mohenjo Daro are going through. Almost all films and actors have faced rejection at some point in their career, but a film like Mohenjo Daro probably hurts more than others.

2 years of hard, tons of research, sleepless nights, the lead star of the film battling through a personal low during the shooting schedule and suffered several injuries. The rest of the cast and crew also worked tirelessly in extremely difficult conditions to shoot for the film.

Hrithik Roshan Look in Mohenjo Daro

All of that meant nothing as Mohenjo Daro was rejected on the first day itself. The footfalls (tickets sold) of the film will be the lowest for a Hrithik Roshan starrer in a long long time. More than the audience rejecting the film, what’ll really hurt everyone involved is the fact that majority of the audience did not even watch the film. That’s the least that you expect after all the struggle – a fair chance for your film. Mohenjo Daro did not even get that.

Hrithik’s presence ensured a face-saving total, without which Mohenjo Daro could well have been a ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ for Ashutosh Gowariker.

Where does the acclaimed director of a Oscar nomination film go from here, that too after three back-to-back failures? Will Pooja Hegde get another chance? Will Hrithik make a strong comeback with Kaabil? These are some of the many questions that’ll be asked in the next few days.

  • I am really disappointed after seeing the trend of Mohenjo Daro . I watched MD on Wednesday with my Mom and Brother . The first half is pretty ordinary but the second half is absolutely brilliant . The fight sequence with Bakar and Zokar and the climax are the highlights of the movie . The crocodile sequence looks fake . Hrithik as always has given a brilliant performance . In first half he shows the innocence of Sarman and in the second half he shows the anger of Sarman . He is the biggest plus point of MD . Pooja has done a good job considering she has made her debut but she could have done better . Kabir Bedi has done a terrific job as Maham who is a ruthless politician . Arunoday Singh looks like a Beast and has done a fine job . The supporting characters have also done their characters pretty well .

MD is not a masterpiece and not on the level of Lagaan, JA and Baahubali but it is not a crap or mediocre movie as many of the reviews suggest . I am feeling bad for Hrithik, Ashu Sir, Pooja, UTV and AGPPL who will be disappointed because the kind of success they needed is now looking too far . The sets of Mohenjo Daro are beautifully constructed and shows the essence of Pre Historic India . Many reviews have pointed about the poor VFX of MD . First of all there are only 2 VFX sequences in the entire movie . The Crocodile sequence is poorly executed . The flood sequence is brilliantly done and it makes a huge impact . The Arena fight sequence shows the hand to hand combat in a realistic manner . The chemistry between Pooja and Hrithik should have been better executed . The love story between Sarman and Chaani is not as beautiful as Jodhaa and Akbar . MD had the potential to the best movie of 2016 but the first half should have been better executed . Overall MD is better than Kites, K3 and Bang Bang . I am happy Hrithik chose MD after doing Agneepath, K3 and BB maybe the result should have been better but I am happy he tried to do something different . Even though you fail it is really important to move in the right direction . This failure will also hamper AG badly as this will be his 3rd consecutive failure as a director and a producer .

I am really happy that UTV, AGPPL and Hrithik invested their time, money and energy to showcase the Indus Valley Civilization probably the oldest Civilization in the world . After BB Hrithik is facing a terrible period – Divorce from Sussanne, Legal battle with Kangana and now failure of MD . So he has faced trouble in his married life, personal life and professional life . But I am damn sure he will make a solid turnaround as he is a fighter and always comes back in a much better manner . After 4 back to back failures media started calling him one hit wonder but he showed his class in KMG . After 2 back to back failures in 2010 – Kites and Guzaarish he made a solid turnaround with ZNMD in 2011 and gave 4 back to back Hits . So MD has lost the clash in every manner – Opening, weekend, collections and verdict . After 4 back to back failures of Akshay in August he has turned the tables with Rustom . Joker, OUATIMD, Entertainment and Brothers all failed at the Box Office . Also he is coming next year with Neeraj Pandey on Independence Day Weekend with Crack which is looking exciting and thrilling .

To all the Hrithik fans I know we all are disappointed after the failure of MD but don’t lost hope and sometimes you have to fail to succeed in future . Cheers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What wrong actually happened ?

I am from Bhuj city / district Kutch where the movie done . Roshan spend 2 years in Bhuj . I even tried to meet him but couldn’t possible at all.

I want to mentioned here that the original place Dholavira is situated in White Rann of Kutch .

While some of the portion area of white Runn is highly become famous as Mr. Bachchan did marketing for it but these Arid area still are not covered in any marketing campaign.

Even from the people of Bhuj /Kutch still we have huge no of families who haven’t visited the viction place ever.

This place is most famous as there is some sign of wood fossils from Jurassik Word and Mohanjo Daro human existence .

ashutosh picked up very tuff topic

All unit were here also before 16 year when Lagaan was done in Kutch rann.

He need to do some thing different now

All team have done lot of hard work but some thing went wrong in making of the epic movie

Any way all the best to Hrithik for Kabil

  • Mojo faced unnecessary negativity even before the release…poor promotion by team they even didn’t defend negativity souurrounding the film….other side, rustom got unnecessary hype nd free publicity just b’coz of clash, nd whole bollywood supported rustom….if rustom solo aati toh 60 crores bhi nhi earn karti …mark my words hritik will come back with kaabil nd fighter….we can’t judge actors just on the basis of one flop…..hritik the greatest actor ever produced by bollywood.

  • @indicine I love this gesture of yours. Taking your time out to put up something like this is commendable and shows your love for Bollywood as a whole and the business aspect of it. But don’t you guys think this isn’t the first time an ambitious movie has not got what it probably deserved. Spare a thought for Bombay Velvet which also was a director’s most ambitious project. If you have seen the movie you’d know better than me the amount of effort, work and money that would have gone into making it. I mean the detailing, the sets, the retro feel, was as authentic as it could get. But that movie, despite starring an A list young actor, didn’t get any sort of love from the audience, Industry and media alike. People in the Industry as well as in trade simply enjoyed it turning out to be one of the biggest disasters. It’s fate ended any kind of hope for Anurag Kashyap to step into the big league. My point is I did not see any such article about BV back then, not that I am blaming you for siding MJD and it’s makers, but hasn’t the Industry, audience and media done injustice to Bombay Velvet just because that director has a vision starkly different from mainstream bollywood? Forget everything, can you guys now write something like this on BV as well? I know that movie came long back but it would be a nice gesture from your side, and could go on to change the perspective of audience towards that movie, because frankly speaking it was declared a All Time Flopbuster the moment it released and the audience just didn’t give it a chance. Most of us think of it as a bad movie without even having watched. If you guys have read this till now, thanks a lot for your patience. But I would again request you guys to give it a serious thought. Anyways, you guys are doing good already. Thanks.

  • After the trailer released, I read about 15-20 properly written and long articles which bashed Mohenjo Daro’s historical inaccuracies. They criticised the costumes, the headgear, the language, and what not. These writers had thoroughly made themselves look like historians who had immense knowledge about the era. Although they were just selling their websites and newspapers through their sensational articles, I’m saddened by their stupidity and the fact that they played a huge role in eliminating the audience’s interest in MD.
When you get on social media and read so much pre-release negativity about a movie, you do make up your mind about not seeing it. You decide to not give it a chance. You don’t care for any hard work involved, because why should you ? Its just a film. And that’s where Indian audiences lack. I think we all can agree MD wasn’t the film we expected. But the question is, was it that terrible ? Was Rustom really so much better than MD ? Wasn’t the effort and hardwork visible on screen ? Personally, MD engrossed me from the start. But when you’ve already considered it a joke before release, the film makers cant do anything anymore.
What did you expect ? People in that era wore semi nude clothes or went nude. Would that be allowed in a family movie in India ? They spoke a dialect which hasnt been decoded completely yet. If they spoke that, would that remain a hindi movie ? Hence Ashutosh Gowariker reimagined all of it. He created a vision in his head and executed so well. But not enough for people.
It was a fictional story set in the MD era. But not a complete biography of it. Like TITANIC was a fictional love story with a back drop of Titanic. Did they show how the ship was made ? Or its technicalities ? No. That’s how you reimagine real times. But unfortunately, Indian audiences couldn’t see that. Mohenjo Daro was a good film. An honestly made film. Its your opinion if you didnt like it, but then its a bad opinion. That’s my opinion. Its our fault that it flopped. And it’ll be our fault if Ashutosh Gowariker and Hrithik Roshan don’t believe anymore in making such a film ever again. This will be a heartbreak for them.

  • I watched the film 2 days ago and without being biased I would say it was a sheer disappointment.
You don’t feel for the characters at any point in the film, talented supporting actors completely wasted, poor storyline..a story which you would have watched some 100 times if you are a bollywood lover plus it drags endlessly till the interval.
Liked only AR Rahman’s brilliant soundtrack, the climax and that arena action scene with bakar-zokar.
pooja hegde did well only in the romantic scenes, terrible otherwise.

Hrithik was very fine in the film.
“Is sheher ko tehas nehas hone se tu bacha sakta hai Sarman” but unfortunately he could’nt!

I’ll go with 2/5 for the movie,0.5 extra for Rahman and Hrithik.

  • Feel sorry for hrithk and ashu sir saw the movie it was a good experience movie only Vfx were let down.i think too much negativity by industry also destroyed it

  • Ok! Fine, 2 years of research and film banane ke baad, ek achcha trailer toh, banaale toh, shayad film chal jaata!

  • VFX is not up to the mark in a film like that.
And the marketing strategy of the film sucked badly.
Costume design was also a subject to criticism.
    No chartbusters songs either.

  • he is making some very non sense decision if its not creating enough buzz ,,,whats the reason of clash if it releases on 19th instead of 12th sureshot it will earnmore as much as it will do now……………..next he is clashing with raees which is very hot in looking if anything go wrong(sanjay gupta films doest not get digested by audience) which is most probable than entire 3 year goes in vain ……hritik we are your fan also ,,,,,but use you mind first

  • only way for hritik to back on track…… first he should avert clash with Raees….. otherwise……he will become another sunil setty…..in 1 or 2 year

  • MD didn’t even cross 50 cr on its first week, can we call it a face saving week because of Hrithik ?

Anyway, I heard the makers of Kaabil confirmed the clash… Hrithik must be very careful, his ego caused him to suffer a lot in this clash when everyone saw that the buzz for MD was low and a clash was a terrible idea, let’s hope he doesn’t do the same mistake with his next. SRK may be in a low phase after FAN, but even his biggest flop his the 10 last years is a much bigger grosser than MD. Be careful Hrithik, please avoid the clash. And stop trusting directors ! Gowariker has lost it after Jodhaa Akbar, and now Sanjay Gupta is a flop director.

  • Great article indicine .Glad u shared it. MohenjoDaro need a fair chance. Liked this line, u summarised all in one line

  • this industry does not deserve like a film MOHENJODARO, they mostly deserve films like READY, DILWALE, IT’s ENTERTAINMENT, SING IS BLING…; etc, I watched both and I m telling you both r one time watch movies but MOHENJODARO is much better then RUSTOM, If u again tell me RUSTOM is a masterpiece then i will tell u that it’s a copy of hollywood FRACTURE(2007);

  • Person to lose d most wld b ashutosh …it wl b difficult for him to get financers and known stars to b part of his project…..hope he comes back stronger and gets another chance….best wishes

  • Hrithik will bounce back, I ve seen mohenjodaro not dat bad to flop so badly, honestly better then happy new year etc. Not good film always bcomes hit. On other hand very very happy for akshay kumar. M his die ha?d fan. All hrithik n akshay fans watch hrithik Roshan’s next movie. 1 more think next week 1 more time I ll watch rustom.

  • Agreed it is a lot of effort to make a movie like this. But, you cannot expect people to pay huge ticket money and watch a movie whose trailer was horrible.

2 years is a long time. It was long enough to get good VFX done. I dont think budget was a constraint. The story is also a huge let down. For 2 years people thought the movie will be in the lines of 10000 BC or Apocalypse but what they got was “Kaho Na Pyar Hain” part 2. You cannot simply fool people in this time and age where good reviews spread fast and bad reviews spread even faster.

  • The paid media…The Fans of other actor…The Bollywood fraternity failed a film like Mohenjodaro…I dont think it is a bad film…Infact it was better than Rustom..Rustom was slow paced through out the time and have more dull moments than Mohenjodaro… I knw the VFX was amateurish and the producer are regretting for hiring Drishyam VFX…But other than that it is amazing story…People are rejecting because of historical facts of Mohenjodaro without even watching it But noone said a thing about Rustom which is based on the popular K.M.Nanavati case as other than the reference nothing was similar to set the tone of a crime thriller…Its just like take a popular story and add patriotism to it and release it on Independence day…It will definitely sell no matter how bad the Film is…
Today Mohenjodaro didnt failed because of Rustom…It failed because of releasing against a so called patriotic film in the patriotic weekend…

  • You cannot fool audience nowadays. What do you expect ? Jantaa will believe people of Mohenjo Daro or Harappa civilisation were fair with feathers in hair and bronze gold dyed hair ?? Lol

Not to mention the boring marketing !!!!!!!!!

  • Public who hasn’t even watched the Film…are judging it resding all negative words in media & saying It crap…where It was not that bad at all!! Where There are no such evidences about that Era..almost nothing is known officially…Ashu Sir atlst gave It a try and has made a clean Family Movie which is nostalgic & relevant at the same time!!It was never a documentary…Ashu Sir told it clearly!! It was just a Director’s vision about That Era!!HR gave His 2 long years, sweat, blood…gave His all(superb performance by HR..ask ny neutral public)!! But Public mocked the whole team without watching the movie!! Is this the poetic justice God!!????on other side Rustom Poster claimed, It is based on true story!!and when Film released It was shown before starting, It is not based on any True Incident!!still public, bollywood, media, critics were okk with that!! Okk fine!! Then why can’t You give atlst a fair chance to MD,why???many can now say about how Film connects to public!!lol..we must admit now a days connection depends on Marketing hugely!!and MD got all -ve Marketing Promotion from very first day!!!sachi mai;Mohenjodaro ki tarah Yaha par, Bollywood & Page 3 ki duniya par vi log nehi,lov-lalach baste hai!! For some personal grudges Conspiracy was made and superbly executed by all!! Feeling very sad for HR & Team MD :-( however…Thank You HR for taking such risk, proud of You Duggu!!i know you r down badly now…but dnt feel lonely,we Hrithikians wl support you till the last breath!!
However, personally watched MD 2 times…enjoyed more on 2nd time…HR was stupendous ??? plzz give Us more such magical performances!!do more movies now, plzz!!

  • Indicine, looks like you are not able to digest Rustom’s success and MJD failure. Movie was a crap so people rejected. Understand that fact And stop publishing such stupid articles. Paying public is not foolish.

  • This will not affect Hrithik’s stardom at all. His brand has been established over a long time. He’s had failures before and has come back 10x stronger. I am thoroughly looking forward to Kaabil, Hrithik’s first low-budget film after a long time. It will surely be a hit.

  • Can Ashutosh break the circle? Don’t know.
Can Pooja Hedge make it big from now? Don’t know.
Can Hrithik bounce back with Kaabil? Hell yeah!!

  • You are saying a flop in a long time, OK But long time because he does less movies.

Out of his last 7 movies..3 movies are flop. So just normal success ratio …!

  • Yes @Indicine Almost all films and actors have faced rejection at some point in their career..
    2009 – 2016
    SRK – Fan – 85 cr
Salman – Main Air Mr Non actor – 8 cr
    Aamir – Dhobhi ghat – 14 cr
    Akshay – Joker – 21 cr
    Hrithik – Guzarish – 32 cr
    Ajay – Tezz -12 cr

Note – SRK Bad phase is better than Other actors good phase.. Salman with his bad phase not possible to collect even 10 % Of SRK ‘s Fan…

    Rank of actors –
    1. King khan
    2. Hrithik
    3. Akshay
    4. Aamir
    5. Ajay
    6. Non Actor

    #Fasal kerala

  • Even if Emran hashmi would have been in a mega budget movie like this, still it would hve done atleast 8 cr..so hrithik and Ashtosh both are equally culprit of this flop !

Give him even a good or average trailer he will give average or poor opening like guzarish, MD,ZNMD!

Give him non holiday he will give average or poor opening like guzarish, jodha Akbr, ZNMD, MJD

Than what for he is a superstar?

For giving good opening on national holidays With Best teaser ever seen like bang bang ? I hope indixine will stop hyping him juxt because they are his fan .
