The pre-Diwali period has always been considered to be unsafe to release a film. But last week’s release 1920 Evil Returns, an horror film, has struck box office gold.
Made on a budget of 9.5-10 crores (including print and marketing), 1920 Evil Returns collected Rs 3.75 crores on it’s opening day, remained steady on it’s second and third day with similar collections. Although the spike in business on Sunday was missing, the film’s opening weekend collections of Rs 12 crore nett is on-par with critically acclaimed movies like English Vinglish and Kahaani.
The drop on Monday was less than 50%, as the Aftab Shivdasani-Tia Bajpai starrer managed to collect Rs 2.25 crore nett.
For a film made on a low budget, 1920 Evil Returns has emerged as a clean hit and a profitable venture for all involved. Post the success of the film, director Bhushan Patel has signed Sunny Leone’s Ragini MMS 2 to be produced by Ekta Kapoor.
