Ever wondered which Hindi film was the first film to do 1 crore net business? Or for that matter the first film to collect 5 crore and 10 crore at the domestic box office?
Way back in the year 1943, Gyan Mukherjee’s Kismet was the first film to collect Rs 1 crore in its entire run at the box office. Starring Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti and Shah Nawaz, Kimset was produced by the first public limited film company Bombay Talkies.
Bollywood Blockbusters
More than 17 years later, K Asif’s iconic Mughal-e-azam was the first Hindi film to surpass the 5 crore mark. The historic costume drama featured Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar, Dilip Kumar as Salim and Madhubala as Anarkali.
The industry had to wait for 15 more years, before Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 All-time-blockbuster Sholay became the first film to cross 10 crore mark. The Amitabh Bachchan – Dharmendra – Hema Malini – Jaya Bachchan starrer was also the first to 15 crore.
And then the ‘KHAN Domination’ began. Apart from Sunny Deol’s Gadar Ek Prem Katha which was first to 75 crores, every milestone was owned by either Salman Khan (25 and 50 crore), Aamir Khan (100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 275, 300, 325 crore) or Shah Rukh Khan (225 crore).

The next milestone to look forward to, will be the film that will cross the 350 crore mark. It won’t be easy, because not only do films need a solo festive release, but other factors like 2-3 major holidays, 2-3 open weeks, along with incredible word-of-mouth.

I had read this article many years ago too..and I knew kismet was the first film to cross 1 crore in its lifetime..also,shree 420 was the first to cross 2 crore milestone and mother India opened the 4 crore club at that time..
just look at that “Aamir Khan (100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 250, 275, 300, 325 crore)” !!! Insane figures !!!! Take a bow aamir !!!!
I would love to read an article on single day collections as well..the first film to hit 10 lakhs on a single day or a 25-50 lakh, 1 crore 2 crore 3 crore 5 crore and so on..these biggest single day collections come in the initial phase of a films release hence determining the star power ..if possible,please @indicine make an article on this milestone also..
This year no movie will cross 300 crores

Raees will be 1st 350 crore, srk + anand l rai next will be 1st 375 crore. Srk+ aditya chopra next will be 1st 400 crore.

What an amazing journey from 1 cr to 325 cr and it just keeps increasing.
Names of all Khans there. But Amir leading with a number of milestones achieved by him and others following him.
Sholay and 3 Idiots two of my most all time favorite movies.

To cross margin like 500 Cr, needs something extraordinary even on EDX (Eid.Diwali.Xmas) holidays (Films release during 2014-2017)

Dangal could do that it has neither the biggest director and it doesnt look like pk or dhoom3.
Sultan maybe but its director is a negative factor.

Aamir khan is the king of good films his films are very gud contentwise and his 12 films are in Imdb top movies a record for an indian eg. JJWS, TZP, Lagann, Sarfarosh, Dil Chahta Hai, Andaz Apna Apna, 3 Idiots, PK now Dangal seems to be very nicely made film. Ace khan make his own path he did films which are very risky and after that other actors follow his style like 1 film per year. He is the path maker for the last 20 years
