It was 10 years ago on this day that one of Shah Rukh Khan’s most loved films, Chak De India, released in theatres. The promos of the film were dull, the music (prior to release) wasn’t popular, it was the least hyped Shah Rukh Khan film during his peak and it didn’t have a leading lady either.
Yet, it was one of the best films of Shah Rukh Khan’s career. A film that promised very little before release, but over-delivered. A kind of film, we wish, he does today.
Ask anyone today about the last SRK film they truly loved, most would say Chak De India while the rest would be divided over Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Om Shanti Om, Chennai Express or My Name Is Khan – only because those films released later.
Back in 2007, our website was new and Chak De India was the first ever movie that we rated 5 on 5. It was unlike most Shah Rukh films in those days. There was hardly any hype prior to release, the expectations from the film itself was quite low and watching the first-day-first-show with the entire cinema hall cheering, clapping and whistling for every dialogue and scene from the film is etched in the memory of those who watched the film in theatres in the mid-2000s.

Bas itna kahunga, ki jao aur yeh sattar minute jee bhar kar khelna.. kyunki iske baad aane wali zindagi chahe kuch sahi ho ya na ho.. chahe kuch rahe ya na rahe.. haro ya jeeto..lekin yeh sattar minute.. tumse koi nahin cheen sakta, Kyunki mein jaantha hu ki aagar yeh sattar minute iss team ka har player apne zindagi ki sabse badiya hockey khel gaya.. tho yeh satar minute khuda bhi tumse vapas nahin maang saktha.
Two of the best scenes from the film:
The famous McDonald’s scene from Chak De India, just before the intermission. The girls unite to fight against the boys, followed by SRK’s ‘chakke’ dialogue. The team and the coach then walk out with the title theme playing in the background.
And the scene that really stood out in the film and quite possibly the scene were SRK’s acting skills are on full display, is the climax. It took the emotions around the India win to a different level altogether. Through the scene after the last goal is scored, SRK emotes through his eyes and facial expressions. Even though it was a completely predictable film – that the team was eventually going to win the world cup – you truly feel for Kabir Khan. His struggle, his passion for the game, patriotism.. all culminating in an historic victory.
Undoubtedly Biggest hit of the decade 2000- 09.
Can anyone guess what would have been the verdict of CDI if it was done by Salman ? Then its verdict would have ‘ All time disaster.’ Lifetime collection – below 10 crore.

I remember watching it FDFS…I initially didn’t like it too much…I was young…but when I watch it now I can understand y it’s an evergreen classic…dangal is an awesome film but that tweaked some moments such as made the coach a villain, dramatic 5point on climax of the 3rd set(in reality Geeta won in 2 sets)..I personally place swades above chak de but acting in chakde was at different level…being an extremely die hard fan of srk I want him to select good subjects…he could have done Dhyan Chand biopic but age is not in his side now…will love ask till my last breath
Rajinikanth can do Robots in his 60s even Akki is 50 for 2.0 so what the hell’s stopping Khan from doing Dhyan Chand at 52 just absolute laziness it’s not as if he is playing sports at pro leagues that he would suffer from being too old like Schumacher, Murali, Ponting and Sachin. Even Salman can get raped like a woman for Sultan at this age so why can’t Shah and nothing stops Aamir, Ajay & Akshay from doing it either. There were several actors in their 50s and 60s who maintain great fitness levels in Hollywood it’s not something unique for Shah.
It’s ironic that instead of writing about first week box office collections of JHMS, indicine has come up with this article about a film which released 10yrs back. This is pure bias !! I never saw any article from indicine on 10yrs of Lagaan or Taare Zameen Par or 25yrs of Salman in the industry whereas they regularly come up with titles like 25 yrs of Shahrukh in Bollywood, 25 yrs in Mumbai, 20 yrs in bandstand bandra, 15 yrs in mannat, 10 yrs in IPL, etc. etc. Well we all know that there’s precious little to write about indicine’s favourite fading superstar today, so they keep dwelling in the past and making up these forced articles. In those last 10 yrs since release of Chak de, Shahrukh has only gone one direction – downhill, whereas Salman n Aamir have just raced out of sight. Salman has thus established himself as a “Megastar”, a term hithero unknown and coined only for him since calling him superstar would be injustice to his mega-stardom…and Aamir has created the biggest overseas market for bollywood in China where a hindi heartland movie has grossed more than 1200 crores…to put that into perspective, the previous biggest bollywood grosser from China had 120 crores, incidentally also an Aamir movie. Shahrukh, meanwhile completed 25 yrs in Mumbai, 20 yrs in Bandra, 15 yrs in Mannat….

to each his own i guess but to me the climax scene of baazigar remains the best i hav seen from bollywood. some say that its overacting but i like it. may be cuz i like more of an intense acting than the realistic ones.
for me srk’s best are baazigar/darr, aamir’s best is ghajini, akshay’s best is aflatoon(a negative role that i think even some of his fans may not know) salman did not show any intense skills to me but he was quite good in tere naam(his best in my book).
