NDTVMovies | Saibal Chatterjee

It is the sort of film in which the stuntmen get more play than any of the principal characters. The latter merely walk in and out of the picture, setting the stage for one violent confrontation after another.

Using the vintage formula, the director T.P Aggarwal fails to enthuse much finesse into his film. An all-in-all entertainer that it tries to be ends up being incorrigible and bizarre at places. Sadly the punches of the film are mostly dull and remain unmemorable. I won’t call it boring because it undeniably amuses you at places but entertainment wise the film falls short.

Director K.S. Ravikumar, who has a plethora of successful films in South, garnishes the film with features that the masses take pleasure in. The conflict between good and evil is riveting too and so is the pacing [rapid], but with not much newness on platter, the film comes across as the usual cop versus politician fight. The soundtrack is strictly okay, with 'Robinhood' [before the climax] having a catchy tune and energetic choreography. Action, one of the high points of the enterprise, is slick and the dash of Southern masala makes it all the more palatable. Dialogue are aimed at the masses and will be greeted with whistles and applause from fans of desi masala movies, especially those delivered by Sanju.

Moreover, the action sequences were taken to a whole new level with this film. For samples, there's a scene where Sanjay Dutt stomps on the floor with force and creates ripples on land which can put even earthquake to shame. There really should now be put a limit to the level of action that should be incorporated in such films.

There is not one thing about this film that is worthy of being watched. Not poor Desai who wears the most horrendous make-up (her cheeks alternate with hot pink and orange) and trying to look suitably lovelorn. Not Prakash Raj, who is doing what he has been doing in all of these hyper-violent Madras Cut films, clunking innocents on the head and doing loud dialoguebaazi, and here, trying to match steps with a visibly ageing Dutt.

Policegiri was never expected to make sense but it’s the serious lack of charisma and the cringe it induces on seeing him romance an almost three decades younger Prachi Desai that spoils its chances even further.

The villain - and this is very important - must be Prakash Raj. And he must play a politician whose larger-than-life cutouts and postersadorn the Filmcity set the movie will be shot. There must be one sequence of him in his underwear. And he must double up as the comic relief in the climax.

But not all is hunky-dory here. The very pretty Prachi Desai looks young enough to be Dutt's daughter. Prakash Raj gets to mouth a few funny lines but overall, his character is way too lame compared to his previous roles. The second half drags endlessly. A 'Sanju baba will be back' message sits right on top of the end credits of the film. For his fans, he already is and he does pack a punch.

What Dutt is good at is when he stops taking his character seriously and lets go. His comic timing is still impeccable and his stand-off scenes with the villain Prakash Raj are the saving grace of the film. Prakash Raj is too brilliant an actor to play the patented villain in all these action flicks. He should stop doing it before he gets burnt out. He does seem to be having the time of his life and his comic punches do manage to instil some life in the film but that shouldn’t be the case, right. If all that the viewer gets to look forward to are the villain’s wisecracks then there is something wrong with the film.

In terms of acting, all the three lead roles are justified. Sanjay appears comfortable as a guy who would bend rules for the good while Prakash is admirable for his comic punch lines. Individually speaking, Prachi does just fine though an older actress would have suited the role.

Within its requisite parameters, Sanjay Dutt does give his whole self to the film in terms of action, melodrama and dialogue-baazi. However, blame it to his aging persona or the incapability of the director, but it doesn't register as one would have expected to.

There are bleak hints of wisdom when Nagori refers to how difficult it is for him to cater to his ego or irony when Sanjay Dutt questions how senior officers and politicians can support someone who has been booked under a terrorist act. More comedy than irony, actually.

Rajpal Yadav comes in to relieve things a bit with his farcical comedy. Mukesh Tiwari and Murli Sharma, both terrific actors who have seen better films, are always seen hovering around Nagori.

Dutt is in form and the bright shirts do him good. Unlike his other recent films, Dutt actually looks good in 'action' mode. Of course, the romantic pair looks odd. Looking more like her uncle, Dutt looks too over-the-hill to be paired with Prachi Desai.

Ravikumar is good at many things such as the colour combination in the backdrop and aerial stunts but his wish to generate many emotions within the same sequence doesn't help 'Policegiri'. His attempt to give the film a social angle falls flat because the spectators could already anticipate the tempo of the story and the events to follow.

It sticks to its genre and the massy feel.. there is something for the over the top entertainment souls.. Sanjay Dutt is entertaining and pleases his fans.. he carries the film on his shoulders as easily as his trade mark walk.. K.S. Ravikumar does a fair job.. Prachi Deasi is ok. Mukesh Tiwari, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav are fine.

Sanjay seems to revel in the absurdity of a crime drama where the law-maker seems to share an affinity to moral ambiguity with the law-breakers. It is all fun to watch – loud, rumbustious, over the top, ear-splitting fun provided you are a Singham-Dabangg aficionado, and a Sanjay Dutt fan.
